My theory.
Did anyone else feel that this movie was just an excuse for Madonna to show the world how buff she is?
Slightly bored, severely confused.

Not really, no!
Partly, yes, you're right. Unfortunately, I think she also wanted to show the "world" (the couple of hundred people who watched the movie) that she is a SERIOUS ACTRESS...she should have made an exercise video instead.
sharelol...i worship madonna, moons, but i kind of agree with you....shes exercising in like every scene
Madonna and HP forever.
Theatre is life, the rest is just rehersal
I hope not. After over 20 years of buying her fabulous records (the soundtrack to the absolute best times of my life) I was horrified by this "film". How could she be so dumb? Guy should keep his subjagation/humiliation fantasies to the bedroom, not inflict them on all of us!
Jesus, at least Sean had talent!
Could be.
Just watched the movie again and I don't get this: This woman is totally buff and an arrogant bitch, etc etc etc. why does she change so rapidly on the island? To me it would seem more logical that this society bitch either tries to beat the *beep* out of Guiseppe or that she'd rather starve herself to death instead of giving in.
But that's just my impression.
And how did she get so weak in the end?
oh jeez i totally agree. and the dance sequence... what was up with that?!?!
I especially disliked the fact that guy ritchie took what was meant to be a BOLD POLITICAL statement about society and capitalism vs communism and turned it into a mushy love story. Swept Away By An Unusual Destiny in the Blue Sea Of August (Wertmuller's original) really had nothing to do with love and man and woman. The characters were just denotations of ideologies, representing political and social ideas about our world at the time. We must remember that the original is an Italian film, it is not North American, the meanings are so much more different. Although I didn't think Guy Ritchie's version was half bad it did really bug me that he totally changed the story... especially at the ending! I don't think this was deliberate.. because I don't think he knew exactly what the original truly meant. But watch both movies again with what I have said in mind and read up on Wertmuller and her commets about teh original and THEN tell me it wasn't just a ploy to put Madonna back out there and show off how hot she is even thoughshe's so old (not to mention the fact that there were pretty much no scenes of her in a bathing suit because her body is so stretched and wrinkled.
Hey now, I'm a madonna fan too, don't get me wrong. But this movie is so far off from teh original it should have just been called. Hey Look at me I'm Madonna and I'm shipwrecked on some ridiculous island with an Italian dude
... just my thoughts anyways
Well, I did like Madonna before, but only as a singer/entertainer. Her movies have always been more about her than anything else.
I think "Swept away" could have been good, but as I mentioned above, there were too many flaws and inconsistencies in the script. It's like every 5 minutes you ask yourself "now why does she do this, what makes him say that, did I miss something"? I didn't even get the switch from Sadomasochistic to love affair, especially when she starts kissing his feet. The love plot was not convincing. The Guiseppe character did have some charm and warmth, but Amber's psyche was a mystery to me.
So why the *beep* didn't she just divorce her husband in the end? She'd been bullying him around and bitching around before her shipwreck, so did she get brainwashed on the island or something? Like "now that I've known true love (whatever) I am a very sensitive and vulnerable woman with fab abs and arms and I cannot decide anything anymore".
Gimme a break.
But the movie wasn't political either. So there were things lacking on both levels, and Madonna's acting doesn't help things. I ever wonder, if she really wants to do this seriously, why not study for a degree? Get your ass out of the Kabbalah center and into a good acting class.
