OLD MOVIE MUCH MUCH BETTER

For anyone who have not seen the old movie by Lina Wertmuller, please do so. That movie is a sort of a masterpiece, with great acting by Mariangela Melato and the great Giancarlo Giannini. The movie was made in the 70s in Italy in which social class tension was high as a result of 68 student protest. So the remake, apart from so so acting by Madonna and Giannini's son (actually a little better), was a bit disappointing for those who know the old movie.

In addition, Ritchie changed the ending in which the "puttana industriale" of the old movie (which means "capitalist whore", Giancarlo Giannini used to call Melato that way all the time in the old movie) chooses deliberately to go back
to her husband although she feels she loves the sailor. The change of ending really upset my boyfriend as it changed the meaning of the story.

P.S.
Musical style performances by Madonna just don't make any sense in the movie...?!

Orig. Swept Away still the most erotic movie ever, & like someone here alluded, ripped from social values of the time. Madonna remake completely senseless (Hollywood moral: Am. middle class would slash its collective wrists if celebrities & hype vanished for a day), like remaking The Day of the Jackal (another film drawn from real events of a decade earlier) with Bruce Willis.

Let's face it, most Am. remakes of Euro film vehicles just another rickety booth in the never-ending carnival of self-absorption & -indulgence.
