Why Jean?
You could have just lifted the plan from inside. No need to get yourself killed.
shareI actually thought the same thing. If she was strong enough to walk out, hold the water back and then lift the plane so that they could fly off then why did she need to leave the plane at all? Just lift the plane from inside. It's like they decided beforehand that she had to die and then they couldn't come up with a decent reason for her death so they just threw something together at the last minute and hoped that people wouldn't notice that it didn't make any sense.
shareHow else was she going to rise from the water and shout "I am Phoenix"
shareDid she? lol! I remember her saying it in the animated series anyway! ;-/

Not in the movie :(
shareWhy didn't storm do a whirlwind and lift it up or Strike it with Electricity to give it some extra power. Aagh really writers?
shareBecause she hadn't really used her powers as Phoenix before. We also saw in the third movie that she didn't have her skills fully mastered.
shareBoth of those would probably have ended up destroying the Blackbird.
shareCome on!
shareHer whirlwinds only seem to destroy things and I imagine a lightning bolt striking a plane would blow it up.
shareShe didn´t really lift the Jet with her powers, she started and controlled it while holding the water back long enough.
You can argue that if she can hold back the water, controll the Jet and speak to the others via Professor X, she should be powerful enough to just lift the Jet but on the other hand, she didn´t really hold of the watermasses.
Why didn't storm do a whirlwind and lift it up or Strike it with Electricity to give it some extra power. Aagh really writers?
Nightcrawler could've teleported everyone to a safer area.
Remember when Wolverine said "YOU! Get her! NOW!" and he tried? He said, "She's not letting me!" It's a safe assumption she kept that control on him right up until she "died".
You know, Burke, I don't know which species is worse. share
As DarkMessias says, she didn't lift the jet by herself. Its engines helped lifted it.
So the logic in the film is that she does not believe she can lift the jet, and maybe she really cannot. But she had confidence she could part the flood for as long as necessary.
Her priorities are therefore:
1) Must stop the water
2) Then get the jet airborne by telekinetically using the controls and powering up the engines
3) Say her goodbyes if she can hold the water that long
