Boat Practice for Regatta?

What is the scene about where Ian and Daphne are practicing her standing up in a boat for the invite to a regatta? Why is she standing on the end of a boat, was she supposed to be doing something in a moving skiff?

It was to practice her posture & balance. If you can stand in a boat, you can stand at a high-society function. Just like how if you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.

If you'd asked me where I'd expect to find a Dodgeball reference, I would NOT have guessed on the What A Girl Wants boards. Kudos! :-P
