M*A*S*H as inspiration?

I have heard Mr. Lawrence was a big M*A*S*H fan, and I was watching an episode earlier tonight which is entirely through the eyes of a soldier, first person style, and he can't talk due to a throat wound. It must have been used as an inspiration for the episode where Keith is new to the hospital and doesn't have the courage to speak up. Hell, they both end on a bus with the staff waving them away! That can't be coincidence.

Many M*A*S*H fans here? Which show do you think was better? Do you think that M*A*S*H was a big inspiration for Scrubs?

I would say it probably was. They both had a lot of humor in them, but also had a lot of episodes that were quite heavy in tone.

Yes definitely. I love mash and its ability to blend comedy and tragedy perfectly. Scrubs is a really depressing show with big laughs in between. Both shows were great and I'm sure scrubs had to be modeled on MASH 100 %

Also, calling scrubs the modern mash is one of the highest compliments a show can get

In terms of which show was better...
Scrubs I can watch any time anywhere and just enjoy it.
MASH I love and overall has a stronger purpose and political message while maintaining amazing comedy, but I have to be in a certain mood to watch it.

Both are cult classics and timeless though

I also noticed a direct similarity in the episode called His Story II where Turk operated on a teen aged boy and severed a nerve in his hands and the boy was a concert pianist who could never play again after that.

On M*A*S*H, Dr. Winchester had an almost identical storyline with a concert pianist. It was a very poignant epidote. So yes, I think there is definitely some influence for the show.
