The Final Season

I just finished having a binge watch of all nine seasons, having not really watched the series when it first aired in my native U.K. Overall, I really enjoyed the first 8 seasons but failed to see the need in there being a ninth. Practically much every character had their personal stories (if you can call them that) wrapped up and J.D. leaving Sacred Heart for pastures new was fittingly emotional as it was poignant. Season Nine strikes me as being more an attempt at a spin off rather than a continuation of the series. Yes, John Faison and John C. McGinley returned as regulars with former stars of the series making brief guest appearances but it felt like a separate series. And with that in mind it didn't quite cut the mustard to be be a potential spin off, let alone a continuation of the excellent series. It wasn't awful, merely adequate and I'm certainly not one for wanting to accept mediocrity when what has gone before was of higher quality.

The writer's strike really screwed everything up for this series. They couldn't wrap it up the way they wanted to, so they had to stretch it out longer. By doing so, the quality suffered and they weren't able to blend into another series seamlessly.
