Season 4 was very close to being my favorite. But here is why it isn't.

Just to make sure, I still LOVE season 4. I love its focus on torture in order to question whether or not an excessive use of it really is neccessary. That scene where James tortures his son had me feeling sick. That wasn't a strained situation, it was just pure evil. And Jack really goes too far himself, making you wonder how much of a hero he really is. I love the Beehroz family, and was deeply invested into their story. That too had a message behind it, being that if someone does horribly, horribly evil things with the reasoning "The end justify the means", are the means really all that good? Even Dina couldn't get behind all what her husband did.

Sure, there was no Kim in this season, but the incredible writing more than made up for it.

There are however, some very jarring problems:

1. What the hell happened to Behrooz? We never find out.
2. What the hell happened to Navi? We don't find that out either, even though he was even more important. Marwan was cool and all, but I think Navi was more intimidating.
3. EDGAR STILES IS SO *beep* ANNOYING. I hated this character. Most of the attempts at comedic relief with him fall flat! He got a little better in season 5, but in this one he really got on my freakin' nerves.

Aw cripes, how could I forget?!

Favorite season, too

1. Who cares what happened to Behrooz? He was given a pardon. His momma sacrificed herself for him. He got to kill his evil dad. And he won't be charged as a terrorist--thanks to his mom (the great Shohreh Aghdashloo).

2. Wasn't Navi shot dead in the laundry room?

3. Aww, I loved Edgar Stiles.

reply

Haha, I know Edgar is a fan favorite. I'm probably in the minority in thinking he's annoying.

Navi was killed by Behrooz and there is a deleted scene on the DVD that shows Behrooz lives.

reply

Oh yeah, you're right about Navi. My memory is a little foggy.

And huge thanks! Great that there's a deleted scene that answers one of my questions.

Jack storming the terrorist hideout to rescue the Heller is the best action scene the show had.

reply

I agree! The whole build-up in the first few episodes was excellent. Particularly because Jack was no longer at CTU at that point.

1. What the hell happened to Behrooz? We never find out.
There's actually a deleted scene where Curtis rolls up and saves him. (So he's never actually handed over).

It's kind of up to you what you want to believe, whether the deleted scene is canon or if he just essentially disappeared and we don't know.
2. What the hell happened to Navi?
Behrooz shot and killed him... it was a pretty epic moment considering that Navi told him that he was weak.
3. EDGAR STILES IS SO *beep* ANNOYING.
I agree, but he was there mainly to interact with Chloe. And their exchanges were pretty accurate I'd say, given how technical minded they both were.
He got a little better in season 5, but in this one he really got on my freakin' nerves.
More like, his nerves got the better of him in Season 5!

Anyway, now that you have most of your answers, Edgar's still there, it seems like there is not real reason why this couldn't be your favorite season now!! It actually is my favorite season. I am little biased though, it was the first one I watched on TV from start to finish.

I thought that the season was non-stop action, had some great new characters, a nice mix of old ones not taking over the entire story, and the ending was great. Season 5 was a fantastic follow-up to this season. Season 6 could have been another great follow-up, but they went a different direction.
