Nelvana's Care Bears return

Canadian toon house Nelvana has announced a revival of the 1980s kids series Care Bears, concluding a number of broadcast and home entertainment deals for the ultra-cute property.

Nelvana's Scandinavian agency, Kidz Entertainment has inked deals for episodes 1-49 of the toon with Sweden's Channel 5, Denmark's TV-Danmarks and Norway's TV2. In addition, Alter Channel in Greece and Kazakhstan's Channel 1&2 have picked up the first 49 episodes, with Romania's Eurocom TV acquiring episodes 1-26.

On the home video front, Greek distributor Modern Times, Israel's Point Plus, PolMedia (Poland) and VAT Company (Bulgaria) have each acquired episodes 1-13. Universal is also preparing to distribute Nelvana's 3D direct-to-video title Care Bears: Journey to Joke-a-Lot internationally.

Sylvie Didieriean, who is responsible for Nelvana sales in Scandinavia, France and Italy, said that the company was "pleased to open the vault" on the classic series and confirmed plans for a second direct-to-video release in North America.

Care Bears follows the adventures of a collection of cute bears which have even cuter names like Cheer Bear, Bedtime Bear, Tenderheart Bear, Wish Bear and Love-a-lot bear. The 1985 movie, Care Bears The Movie, grossed US$34m internationally at the box office.
