Anti-White

I had the displeasure of watching some of this movie over the weekend. I found it to be nothing but anti-White, racist propaganda. I am truly surprised this was green-lighted.

i think this movie was anit-black accually, the whites were square but hard working and dedicated, the blacks were weed smoking nasty asses that cheated their way into havard and corrupted everyone they chilled with.

While I can appreciate the opinions being expressed here I must disagree. This movie is first and foremost a comedy where nothing is sacred.

If this movie strikes you as anti-white then stay away from Harold and Kumar. In both of these films the white characters are dorks, idiots, freaks and losers. Comedic stereotypes. Used in the same way blacks have been used for ages in comedies such as Animal House or Vacation. The key to How High is that several different racial stereotypes are employed. Black, white, Asian, Indian, ect. And they are used on several different levels. Not only do we have the typical "ghetto" blacks in Silas and Jamal we also have the white, self-hating black history professor. The "bourgeois black" Dean of Students. The over-agressive white, rich kid (Bart) along with the ignorant but open-minded white kid in Jeffrey. There is also Lauren, the smart, intelligent African-American who is neither "bourgeois" nor "ghetto".

To me, the stereotypes used in this movie were done in a purposeful, over-the-top way, as in Harold & Kumar. Shoving them down our throats, if you will. Much like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, George Carlin and Redd Foxx used profanity and racial stereotypes in their comedy to "take away their power". That is a tough concept for a lot of people, I know, but it's something to ponder instead of taking everything at face value.

Meanwhile, this movie also has some great, funny moments that aren't dependent on race. Such as the graverobbing of John Quincy Adams, the discovery and implementation of Ben Franklin's giant bong or the theft and destruction of the "volunteer security guard's" cherished bicycle. The thieves rolling up to collect the destroyed pieces of the bike as it's owner screams in horror is priceless.

Anyway, I just wanted to put in my two cents and perhaps offer another view. To each their own but to me this movie was funny and as good as Harold & Kumar.

I totally agree with dwatts13. This movie did so much better with characters than I thought it would. Yes there were a few parts where I was like "hmm, they must have forgotten to take that out during editing" ie: after Ivory dies when Meth was putting his ashes in the soil and he asked his dad for some weed but it came out totally muffled and hard to understand. Other than these little problems I still think it was better than many expected especially with the great timing of it's release (December 21, 2001 not too long after 9/11) everyone needed a movie they could just sit back and laugh easily and not feel guilty about it.

I appreciate the opinions of those whom don't like this movie because it's definitely not for everyone but, come on people, loosen your belts and learn how to laugh at yourselves a little. I'm white and I still laugh hysterically when I hear white people being bashed. Anyone that thinks this movie is anti-white is the exact kind of person that deserves to be laughed at in movies like this and on Comic View. Live life and love. Oh yeah, light that s***, smoke that s***, pass that s***.

i think the fact that meth throws on some hammerstein to wake red up is proof enough that neither of them are racist.

reply

Who is Hammerstien? It's Rammstein, rrrrrraaaaaaammmmm- Stein.

reply

LOL Hammerstein? Like the producer of musicals? Rogers & Hammerstein?

I completely agree, they were definitely meant to be over the top. And honestly I am white and could not stop laughing during this movie. Sometimes people need to stop taking everything as a personal attack and be able to laugh at themselves and stereotypes.

I am an 18 year old college student from a middle class family.

I am also White.

I didn't find this movie racist at all. I find it hilarious. It's just another comedy that makes stupid jokes based on stereotypes. So what?

Do you guys really have nothing better to do than troll a movie about smoking pot that stars two rappers as the protagonists?

Yes they make fun of the whites uptight sqaure, the asian math prodigy, the un-hip, uptight black dean, the douchebag rich prep.

Who cares it isn't anything that hasn't been done before in the past 20 or more years.

You guys take movies too seriously. Just chill out and enjoy movies for once, you will be amazed at how much fun you may have.

reply

haha. well said seth.

reply

sethcort said it best.

Anyone who would be offended by this movie needs to know the film industry is to entertain only. Nothing is to be taken seriously unless the film is based on a true story, or a documentary.
Just escape and have fun at all of the steriotyping - I have too much to be serious about in real life.

reply

agree with sethcort

people just need to chill out and laugh, stop trying to create a race issue where there is none.

You take pressing the enter/return key seriously. You're not writing an essay. Ugh..

I don't check replies.

The original poster was dead on with his remarks. This movie is completely filled with anti-white stereotypes that completely detract from its attempt at "humor". Not to mention all the other walking cliches. A stuffy white guy on the rowing team that has awful social skills? Terrible

reply

You just don't get it getlost... African Americans love to make fun of whites as snobish pigs who look down at African Americans - its how they really feel, but are not open enough to admit.

reply

This is no more racist than Van Wilder. Richard in Van Wilder was the exact same stereotype. Are you saying it's okay for a movie to make fun of that stereotype when the majority of the cast is white, but not okay if the majority of the cast is black? If so, you're the one whose being racist.

If you love Satan and are 100% proud of it copy this and make your signature!

Im pretty sure you are reading WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to much into a movie called "How High". It's funny, pull the stick out of your arse and stop trying to look for a hidden agenda in everything. You'll probably enjoy life more if you do.

I am 99% sure that is not the real Ben
Franklin...

Speaking of the racism of this movie, I can't help but admire the irony that they chose John Quincy Adams of all people for their graverobbing expedition. Looks like at least the bastard's corpse got a chance to experience the end-result of his efforts for emancipation. :D

reply

Anyone who thinks this movie is racist needs to smoke more weed and chill and not take everything so damn seriously. lol.

reply

Blacks are allowed to be racist. If you don't accept that then you are a racist.

reply

i hope your taking the piss druguzdog, no-one has the right to be racist, it just shows a limited mind and shallow beliefs. if your serious then your an idiot.

funny *beep* film too, i didnt see any racism. you see stereotypes in all kinds of movies of all kinds of people all the *beep* time.

your opinion is the wrong one.

reply

the movie is all funny and not at all racist. its a comedy not a documentary man lighten up or ask yourself why you watched the movie in the first place if you don't know how to laugh.
