Just saw this, Moore as depicted by Gibson seemed sometimes dumb,..

Meaning when he would stand up without a care in the world barking orders while everyone kept their heads low to avoid getting shot to s#$%.

I mean, sure commanders have to be on the front lines and all that to inspire confidence and loyalty, but standing tall without even ducking?

Looked more like John Wayne BS than real combat (a.k.a. Platoon where EVERYONE is literally ducking bullets or getting hit by them, including the commanders).

Ruined whatever realistic feel the movie had. You can't tell me someone like that in real life would last more than 5 seconds when entire platoons were being gunned down at the same time whenever they hit a cleared field.

And please, spare me the "I'm a vet, you're not so fock you" BS in your replies. Unless you can PROVE your claims you're nobody, at least here. So don't even bother replying with "real combat experience" cred. I'm stating how MEL GIBSON looked in the film, not how the actual Moore performed in Vietnam.

Like TOM HANKS in SPR, he was also a commander (of his troops regardless of his actual rank, I'm not stating he was a general) and still I'll buy his performance over Gibson's anyday. You could see it in Hank's eyes that he was aware he could go in any second if he kept still even for a moment. Gibson however looked aware he's not going to die since he's the star (and Moore survived) and acted accordingly. Ruined it for me, everything esle was great.

Aha, two things:

1.- That was FICTION, this is not (supposed to be kinda authentic retelling of that battle)
2.- In Apocalypse Now they were not battling over 2,000 NVA soldiers, plus Duvall standing tall was a sign of madness and tongue-in-cheek dark humor, not supposed to be taken seriously, unlike Gibson here.

And to top if off, I doubt those Cavalry hats Duvall was wearing were standard Army issued of the time...

I doubt those Cavalry hats Duvall was wearing were standard Army issued of the time

In fact, Cavalry personnel commonly wore those hats during this time and still do. They are an authorized head-drerss for those units.

I thought that Mel Gibson did a decent job as Hal Moore in the film.

reply

Well I disagree.

And as far as the hats go, good to know. Are the surf boards also standard Army issued as well?

I read he was very much like the real Moore.

But I SERIOUSLY doubt the real Moore looked so ridiculous. There are things that work cinematically and others that simply don't. Him standing tall carefree in the middle of a gunfight was one of them.

Im not an expert, but Gibsons character seems to be pretty religious and it made me think of the old Jackson story, how he stood tall in battle and commanded his men to do likewise, because if god had destined for him to die, he would do so standing or lying down.
To set one inside a persons head could mean anything, and I belive he could have been standing...at least in some situations. Logical? Maybe not, but as a commander and what duty means, experienced in many battles .....i don't know, doesnt seem all unlikly. Everything comes and goes, how people thought at a time, how they lived etc.

Take my word for what it is, a guess. But it feels like a good one, and until I actually experience battle, I will keep my mouth shut, because its something you can never really talk about untill you experience it.
