Best aspect of this movie

I think what really raises this movie above the usual war films is the fact that it refrains from using music during the battle scenes. I like how the makers of this film want the viewers to focus only on the sounds of the battle itself, and are confident that it's enough to drive home the intensity of combat (which it is).

While I definitely really like other war films as well, such as 'Black Hawk Down', I feel that movie too often just "forces" it's themes to the audience, since there's pretty much non-stop some kind of musical score backing the battle scenes.

I think you should watch Band of Brothers and The Pacific. IMO they do a better job but I understand what you mean. Nothing is cheesier than having some soundtrack popping on when the idea of portraying war in film is to show what it was like to be there. TBH war films should have little to no scores.

SOG Vet John Plaster commented about his first firefight in Laos that there was no 'pulse pounding soundtrack', just the sound of his own breath panting, his heart pounding in his ears & the gunfire & explosions.

I liked the lighting, how it only showed at some points Gibson's hat, his face was in shadow, so cool.

BUT THE BEST, BEST was the illumination scene. OMG, they were right freaking there. Best scene in a film; so cool.
