Not sure if this is the right film [spoilers]

I've been looking for an older war based in the Vietnam war era where a team of black ops get dropped in behind enemy lines and abandoned, one of the characters, referred to a a priest i think? starts to lose his mind and is seen hacking away at a tree with a machette, the camera pans around and it's revealed that he's in fact cutting the head off an enemy Vietnamese captain, he then carries it around for a while in the movie, saying it's good luck. then when the others insist he bury it because it is rotting one gets killed by a sniper ,sort of proving that it was providing them some sort of luck.

Not sure,but maybe Jacob's Ladder? Was there subway stations involved? Maybe other head trips to the point that you don't really know what you just watched?

One thing I can't understand is why the film industry has to populate films about 'behind the lines black ops units' like SOG with some of the most incredibly stupid, clumsy & malfunctioned people to ever live, instead of some of the best trained soldiers we had.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?
