Is This Movie That Popular?

I returned from Walt Disney World in Florida a few days ago and was suprised by how much Stitch merchandise is available. For every ride there is a Stitch stuffed animal to go with it, plus t-shirts and pins. I bought a towel that has "DISNEY 2007" on it with Mickey, Minnie, Goofy and Stitch. Out of all the amazing Disney movies why do they just have Stitch, it doesnt make sense to me. Honestly when I saw the movie in thearters (I was 11), I didn't like it. Maybe I was the only one? I dont know but it seems like Disney is obbsessed with Stitch merchandise.

Everywhere? Not where I live. All I ever see is Winnie the Pooh and Tinkerbell.

They use Stitch as a demi-mascot of sorts, like the Princesses/Tinkerbell/Winnie the Pooh. The Princesses and Tink are more for the girls and Pooh is more unisex. They needed something that leaned towards more "masculine" merchandise and Stitch fit the bill.

Turns out he was a generally loved alien (by both sexes), and they kind of went a bit overboard. They figured if they put him everywhere, kids are going to see him everywhere, nag their parents and eventually will get their Stitch toys. At least that's what my managers told me when I asked about the over-saturation of Stitch when I worked there.

..Greater good?! I am your WIFE. I am the greatest Good you are EVER gonna get!

In Japan, Stitch (and this movie in general) is the most popular Disney creation to date. ANYWHERE you go you can get Stitch merchandise, cell phone straps, plush toys, pillows, clocks, bags, cushions ect ect. When Disney on Ice came here last month they had Stitch as one of the characters (came in at the end of scene transitions, was exclusive to Japan) because they had to include him to sell tickets. Also many girls, into their early 20s even, love the character and buy the themed goods at every chance. A 17year old girl I know has her room wall to wall covered with the character.

i'm obsessed with WDW and stitch. stitch merchandise can be found everywhere because stitch is wildly popular by disneyers. stitch fans also tend to spare no expense when it comes to collecting stitch merchandise.

the character stitch crosses over every age group, unlike other characters that might just appeal to children, so that adds to it.

stitch is a modern icon for disney-- edgier and more humorous for the times.

i might add that i'm a big pin collector/trader and stitch's pins sell the best. hence the many releases of stitch pins every year at wdw and to a lesser extent DL.

i'm not sure if anyone read this, but i read in a recent article that tinkerbell merchandise sells very well, too. while i'm not necessarily a tinkerbell fan, i recognize that her appeal is her femininity and sass, much like stitch's outright unconventional attitude.

oh, i forgot to mention perhaps the most important reason why stitch merchandise is so popular!

the movie made over 145 million bucks. the budget was only 80 million. this was the first traditional animation movie disney produced in a LONG time that had such a great profit (at a time when it seemed that disney and pixar would never reach an agreement and were going their separate ways). lilo and stitch the series, lilo and stitch 2, and stitch: the movie also turned out a great amount of money in DVD sales etc.

though pixar movies also turn out a ton of money, disney and pixar have had their problems (and at one point their complete separation) over the last few years. also, disney tends to throw pixar characters into a different genre (they started to promote them at disney's calif. adventure) and left disneyland to the traditional characters. disney's mgm (soon to be disney's hollywood studios) is starting to do the same.

oh, also, most of lilo and stitch was produced on disney world property (before the shutdown of their animation studios there)...so that was a pretty big deal, too.

so stitch just makes sense!

Wow, where do I start? I'm 49 and a newly-minted Stitch-o-holic. I noticed all the Stitch stuff at Disneyland and decided I should watch the movie to see what all the fuss is about. Now I know, and I have Stitch stuff all over the place. I also collect pins and have lots of Stitch pins. It's crazy but I just love him. (I'm wondering how much stuff and how many pins does one need before it's like having a real one?) I have a 12-year-old neighbor and a childhood friend of mine who is my age and we're ALL hooked on Stitch.

In reference to previous comments about California Adventure, Stitch can be found there along with the Pixar gang, and if it's a moderately busy day, he will be mobbed with fans--at least as many as Mickey or Minnie!

YES, the movie is worthy of high popularity, and Stitch is not the whole reason for that; everything about the movie is good. L&S2 is good too, with some flaws but once you're a Stitch fan, who cares. He's Cute and Fluffy! And does housework...
