one important thing to remember about locals in Hawaii is that precious few of them are actually Hawaiian. With the melting pot nature of Hawaii, you've got Samoan, Portuguese, and Chinese (to name a few) blood coursing the veins of many many locals.
and with ethnic mixing to this degree, you get a lot of striking features that standout: like big noses or slanted eyes.
It's happenstance, so racism doesnt even factor into the discussion.
Note that even their eyes are drawn differently than the tourist, as they should be with(if) Asian lineage. In fact, all Polynesian DNA can be traced back to Asia via ice-bridges 10,000 years ago.
Add European blood to the mix and you get locals drawn with big noses and slanted eyes. It's fine. It's far better than comedies set in Hawaii that always have at least one OBESE local.
