Social services are evil in this movie....definite spoilers

Ok I love this film, I’ve seen it countless times and think it is one of Disney’s best films to date, but one problem I do have is the way Social Services are portrayed

I can’t remembers if the entire family was in the car when it crashed but Lilo and Nani are suddenly orphaned at such a young age, this naturally would have affected her emotionally, yet no mention is given to a grief councillor, or payout from the city for the dangerous roads that killed her parents so Nani could raise her without worrying about money

Cobra belittles Nani for not having a job, even though the job she had originally meant she had to take Lilo to work with her through lack of options. So this poor girl is expected to hold down a full time job and be a primary caretaker to her sister with now help or benefit system! And since she’s only 19 she’s taken on all this responsibility and the people who should be supporting her are trying to take her sister away.

So after losing her parents, Cobra is happy to rip her from the arms of her sister and dump her in a home.
And this line really sums up Cobra
[Cobra places Lilo in the car and closes the door.]
Nani: Please don't do this.
Mr. Cobra Bubbles: You know I have no choice.
Nani: No! You're not taking her! I'm the only one who understands her! You take that away, she won't stand a chance!
Mr. Cobra Bubbles: You're making this harder than it needs to be.
Nani: But you don't know what you're doing! She needs me!
Mr. Cobra Bubbles: [points to the exploded house] IS THIS WHAT SHE NEEDS? It seems clear to me that you need her a lot more than she needs you.

Lilo is loved, clean fed and her sister is doing the best she can, but for some reason even though it is clear Nani is not abusive or a junkie, her efforts are not enough for the SS!

I agree that Nani loves Lilo and she seems to be trying very hard. I do think Nani could use some help, not sure how social services usually works. But I am disturbed by a 5-year old girl swimming unsupervised at the beach. Also that teacher just tells her to wait for Nani and then leaves her waiting alone. Lilo needs a better support system, but I do agree it would be best to keep Nani and Lilo together.

"Abusive" and "junkie" are not the only criteria that could make someone unfit to care for a child, and Nani clearly was failing in the beginning of the film. Lilo locked her out of the house (after getting back home from biting another kid).

I actually thought that this film averted the sterotype of a social worker itching to take a child away from their family. Bubbles' lines in the beach scene made it clear that he derived no satisfaction from his decision.

Well apparently she lets her run around town alone till 1. That's hardly responsible.

You think you think that you're glowing, but you had been ho-ing, and now you're pregnant.

Social Security has to ensure that the parent/guardian is able to completely support a minor until they are able to care for themselves. They have to be completely objective and cannot be burdened by emotional ties if the minor is not being appropriately supported. Besides, they are not going to keep them from seeing each other, that is illegal unless Nani has a criminal record. Nothing would have stopped Nani from seeing Lilo everyday, it just would have to be under the supervision of Lilo's new guardian for a while.

Cobra's rant at Nani made sense from a non-emotional level. Nani leaves Lilo for a couple of minutes and the entire house kabooms while she is gone, thus Lilo needs %100 care at all times. Nani is young herself and cannot possibly give that kind of commitment. Cobra is trying to get Nani to consider "Do I let Lilo have what she needs or do I jeapordize her growth by forcing a family unit that can't support her?"

You should also consider the fact that Social Security isn't just looking out for Lilo, but also for Nani. If she works herself to the bone in order to support Lilo when she just stopped being a minor can lead to a lot of problems for the two later on. Nani just became an adult and she has to suddenly has to have the burden of watching her younger sister, which can cause nothing but resentment later in life. In an objective sense, Mr. Bubbles is trying to save their relationship later down the road.

Social Security is not Social Services. Social Security is what you pay into out of every check. Social Services are the people who help out families in need, or in this case are involved with a family where there is suspected abuse or neglect. What I didn't get, was why didn't they get their parents' Social Security benefits. Why didn't the town they live in come together and help them out after their parents died? They were the most uncaring, cold community ever. They knew Nani needed help, yet no one would give her a job, no fundraisers to help them with money, no one would babysit so she could work, and even Lilo's own teacher didn't care.

Nani clearly loves her sister, but is failing at taking care of her at the beginning of the film. She leaves food cooking on the stove while she isn't home, lets Lilo wander around town by herself on several occasions while she goes out trying to find jobs or is working, etc. Is it her fault that there aren't enough people to help her out? Of course not. But the point of social services is to look out for the best interests of the child, and it was clearly a dangerous living situation especially since the last time Lilo is left alone the house gets destroyed and she nearly dies--prompting Social Services to intervene and take Lilo away. They were fully in their right to intervene after what they could see of the situation.

I wouldn't call them evil, it's not like Cobra Bubbles had bad intentions in taking Lilo away from Nani. As far as he was concerned, he was having to do his job right from the beginning, I wouldn't even say him knowing about the aliens had anything to do with it, as Nani was being watched with Lilo before Stitch even came into the picture.
