Stitch's Name

Does anyone know how Stitch got the name 'stitch'? I've rewatched this fil a couple of times recently and it doesn't seem to be explained.

It SOUNDS very much like it got derived from his 'Experiment 626' name, so I was wondering if there's a deleted/shortened scene from the dog pound where Lilo first finds him and before he finds out that dogs don't talk where he told her his name? Anyone know?

I haven't watched this movie in a while so i couldn't tell you and i don't own the movie anymore.Sorry.

Lilo named him Stitch when she bought him at the dog shelter.

I kind of thought that Lilo named Stitch that name because she was hoping he would stitch toghether the broken family...which in the end, he does help do.

I think it was just a name she chose... but it seems like a good idea about the whole "stitching the family together" thing, though I'd think that would be more of a metaphor in the writing as opposed to the character's motivation...
When I read the OP my first thought was that she stitches her own dolls and stuff so maybe she'd name her pet after her toy friends... that's probably stupid, I don't know...
Anyway, most kids have names for pets they haven't even got yet, if I got a dog I'd call it Squire XD It's probably just one of those situations

Lilo was a 5-year-old girl in the movie. She picked the name Stitch because she liked it...lol... Sometimes there is no underlying philosophical reason.

I think (although I don't know) that there was some deeper meaning to the whole Stitch name. Remember when Lilo goes to name Stitch at the dog shelter, and the shelter owner goes to say that Stitch isn't a real name. Nani gestures urgently that she shouldn't say that, so she adds "...in iceland". I'm guessing the Stitch name is something deep from before their family was torn asunder. Like I say I'd need to watch the film again though.

i naver thought of that. I thought Nani Nani gestureing to the shelter owner, was just like. ( you do not whan to argue with her)

Yeah. I always figured Nani was gesturing at her to tell her to just not say anything, sort of to protect Lilo, so Lilo wouldn't feel like more of an outcast by picking a name that isn't actually a name.

This is my signature.

Yeah, but sometimes you shouldn't underestimate children. They can be a lot smarter and deeper than you think.

Some secrets need to be kept,
Some stories should never be told...

Nope, there is no exaplation as to why Lilo decided to name him Stitch. The lady that was working there, was like that is no name, and Nnani manged to make her change her mind, or to say in Iceland, but here it is a good name.

I think Lilo just likes to make up unusual names, like "Scrump" for her doll.

Lilo just came up with it off the top of her head. She gave him that name, as she didn't know that his real name is Experiment 626. She's not old enough to think of any big reason behind the name.

A possibility I wonder about is that the writers+director+producer decided early on that this alien needed to be funny. "He is a 'stitch'" is a slang shorthand for "He has the audience in stitches". So one of them thought up the name. ... (And, in the movie, they just had Lilo provide 'Stitch' with no explanation.)
