Lilo's obsession with fat people

DOES ANYONE UNDERSTAND!?!?!?! or was it just a random thing.

reply

Not sure if it was an obsession with fat people as much as an obsession with strange looks. Like the drastic tan lines of the t-shirt.

reply

well, they're fat white tourists...this may be a reference to the tourist invasion of Hawaii. either way, i always laugh my ass off at this! lilo is so cute.

reply

That poor guy never gets to finish his icecream does he? lol

reply

i agree it was probably to highlight the tourist presence in Hawaii

it's also crucial to show what an outsider Lilo is...

locals, even haole kama'aina, tend to dislike (or at least avoid) tourist.

Lilo actually likes them, finds them beautiful, and photographs them.

you told yourself something funny the other day. you said you cant make you laugh.--halo benders

reply

Well most people from natives to haole kama'aina tend to dislike tourists cause they're annoying as hell. Alongside some annoying haoles, tourists are tacky and tend to ruin Hawaii.

paradox. Hawaii, as we know it, wouldn't be "Hawaii" without the tourism industry.

I'm from Pearl City, and it illustrates how far-reaching the tourism dollar extends to all townships and suburbs on Oahu. I cannot imagine my beloved island without the influence (good *and* bad) of tourism.

and it's deeper than just "annoying as hell." many locals are annoying as hell, why you tink we scrap so much?

I cannot speak for Maui, or Da Big Island.

See, I've lived in Hawaii for nearly five years, and I was accepted as a haole kama'aina....pretty much. But I know a lot of people (a lot of young vapid military people) who go around being annoying as hell, I knew one girl who took pride in the name haole, it was annoying because she was a tacky tourist like person, she didn't understand how derogative it is. But yeah, I'd be lying if I said all locals were nice as well. But tourists can get on my nerves sometimes.

Im haole, and was born Leeward Oahu. I take pride in the name haole. It's who I am. I've fought all my life to earn that pride. and respect. Ive gotten into so many fights before the color of my skin was even an issue... it's Hawaii, fights happen--and quickly.

prolonged eye-contact is still the #1 reason for fights in Hawaii. beating "tourists, G.I.'s, and haoles" (combined) 15-to-1.

derogative? perhaps. no more so than someone calling you an a__hole. All my uncles and aunties call me "haole boi." Hell, my football coach called me White Lightning! LOL. you can't let the little things bother you.

So I think Lilo had identity issues. She was a true outsider. She had wonderlust and the haole tourists from faraway places fed the explorer in her. Growing up, she's the type of local girl we'd say "doesn't put shoyu on her rice, eh!"

reply

Okay well to the friends i had growing up, haole was derogatory. And when I knew the girl who prided in 'haole' it was derogatory in our area/friends/school.

Also take into account that Lilo is a kid. Kids can get obsessed with some really wierd and funny things. For absolutely no reason at all. Lilo will probably grow up to be a great photographer, seeing beauty in things that people wouldn't think about, and finding ways to show how they are beautiful in her pictures.

I had a roommate in college, back in '85, who turned me on to the comedy of Rap Reiplinger by playing his album "Poi Dog".
Roomie was a haole who'd lived in Hawai'i for a spell, and he was explaining all about Hawaiian culture before each sketch on the album: "You need to understand that, in Hawai'i, room service is really bad..."

one of the best. Frank De Lima might have more natural talent, but nobody beat Rap's energy.

Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.

I think she's more interested in tourist pictures. Tourists who happen to be fat.

I drank seven.

reply

Fat people like who? Elvis Presley? He was only fat the last couple of years of his life? If you have ever taken the time to watch his movies, even if they are all pretty much the same, he is skinny in all of them. So who are these fat people that you think that Lilo has an obsession with?

reply

In Lilo's bedroom, she has a bunch of polaroids of fat people (most likely tourists) on her wall. We see them when she tells Nani her camera is out of film, and Lilo points to the pictures and whispers, "Aren't they beautiful?" while Nani looks freaked out.

Some secrets need to be kept,
Some stories should never be told...

What exactly is the definition of the word "haole"?

reply

Y'know, considering one of the deleted scenes where she scares every tourist off of the beach, I suspect that she's being ironic.

Wow.

Bitter irony from a child.

That is hilarious!

reply

It was so funny!Aren't they beautiful?!

Do guys like "the thing"?
They like it better than no thing.

reply

I don't think it's even ABOUT Hawaii or fat tourists!

I think it just illustrates that Lilo is a really special girl who is fascinated and sees beauty in things that most people don't notice. She feeds a fish peanut butter sandwiches, she's obsessed with Elvis, she thinks big round bodies are beautiful, and she chooses THE WORLD'S UGLIEST and FREAKIEST-LOOKING "DOG" from the pound when everyone else is kind of bewildered by her choice.

Lilo's original.

reply

Lilo's original.

And special in a non-princess type of way. It's all about taking in the ugly ducklings and making them a part of the family (repeated throughout the movie is the ohana pledge, nobody is forgotten or gets left behind). She's special because she sees beyond the surface.

reply

If you look at Elvis in the mid-1970's, those two things kind of go together. He put on lots and lots of weight.

reply

I didn't see it as an "obsession with fat people". I saw a Disney protagonist who for once wasn't a white-skinned princess type, in a setting where darker-skinned people with big noses were the normal ones, and the occasional white tourist was the odd one out (and thus worth taking a picture of). I found that really refreshing.
