why was social services involved?

she is her sister, why did they have to check in? i always assumed that if something happens to the parents, that a sibling that is an adult can take over.

i didnt realize social services would magically show up and know if parents arent present.... or are things different in hawaii?

I always thought that it was because Nani is a young legal adult. Maybe 18 or so, and because of her youth they worried if she had the maturity to care for a six year old. Social services could have also been involved because of Lilos "different" behavior, i.e. her need to feed pudge the fish, and how she reacts when she gets mad. Maybe social services was already involved in a couseling capacity for lilo? Anyway, just my thoughts on your question :)

My guess is that because their parents died in a car accident, they probably had to have counseling and other visits from social services to make sure they were coping. Because there were obvious problems (Lilo's behavioral issues, and Nani struggling to take on the role of a single parent), social services was required to do result checkups.

I took the "she has been there been there very long remark be to a reference to the fact she's only 5 or six.
