Amber/Danni

It's no secret that the tribe has a lot of continuity errors, random disappearences, peculiar storylines etc. but heck that's why we love it. I tend to put these out of my mind; the show isn't perfect but it makes it unique! Something that really annoys me though is the Amber/Danni senario.

When Bray backs out of the city leader election in season 3 three, the tribe say things like "If Amber was here, she could have been city leader - the people love her!". It's the same in season 4/5, Jay continues to comment on how much the city loves and respects Amber. The kids all seem to know her as well.

Don't get me wrong, Amber was my favourite character in season 1. We all know Danni was her obvious replacement in season 2. But it annoys me how quickly Danni was forgotten. Well, not so much Danni, but her work. I know she isn't the most popular character(!), but she was a HUGE part of the peace talks etc. in season 2. When exactly did Amber become so loved by the city? She went to one tribal gathering in season 1, and at that point no one had even heard of the Mallrats. She was "dead" in season 2 and with the Ecos or kidnapped for most of season 3/4.

Excuse the rant, but I am rewatching my dvds and this is bugging me!

I see what you mean, but generally Danni's character didnt really work and was obviously just a replacement for Amber.
Well, the way i see it Amber was quite well respected by a number of people, most importantly the Mallrats. And considering they were nearly always in on something, she was the matriarchal character. Especially as this was a story about teenagers or children trying to survive without adults, such an important figure i guess was quite important to them and key in the series generally.

I always loved Amber, and i think the fact that she was 'Eagle' just shows that anywhere, and with anyone she could display her leadership skills and demand respect from any group of people.

I guess i feel sorry for Danni but she never really made an impact, whined a lot and was always going to play second fiddle to Amber.

Danni did a lot of the things that Amber was supposed to do in season 2. Danni was swept under the rug so quickly in season 3 that I think there was a subtle effort on the part of the producers and writers to give Amber credit for what Danni had accomplished.

As far as the show's continuity goes, I think that Amber bringing the Ecos in during the fight with the Chosen would have been seen the same way someone bringing in the calvary in an old western. A lot of the kids in the city probably see Amber as the person who marched into the city with an army that saved them from the Chosen. That's not an completely accurate description of what happened, but a big part of the city might see it that way. Bray is seen as the guerrilla leader who resisted the Chosen, but couldn't beat them without help. Amber is seen the city's savior.

There's a difference between respect and love. Unfortunately for Danni, she wasn't really a lovable character to the majority, she was kind of awkward. Whether written that way by accident or design, written that way she was.

I don't know how much credit the writers deserve for it, but the whole scenario makes a pretty relevant comment on personality vs politics. Some people are remembered for their deeds, some people's deeds are remembered, and some people are simply remembered. Danni's deeds were remembered, because they helped "society" move forwards. Amber was remembered. Both for her actions, and for herself; she *was* lovable, and warm over awkward.

Unless they're exceptionally lucky, societies need icons as well as activists, and Amber was a great icon. It really just made the show that bit more realistic, I think! In a sad way, sure, but if you can learn from it tv needs to be sad sometimes.

Aaand that's my few pennies on the subject. I wonder what I'd have said if your topic had been Amber/Danni femslash, like I was actually expecting?
