Why was Regina so insistent that the gas ring be turned off?

It was the old lady demon and I'm thinking that they can only come after you in true darkness? The mom also tried to get Regina and Paul to turn off the lantern and Regina shouted, "no, you're not my mother!" Then she turned into slimy freaky lady demon and slithered off across the ceiling. Unfortunately, the mother thought it was her children telling her to turn off the burner, so she did. Cue scream.
