25 years of USA Up All Night

The first episode of USA Up All Night aired 25 years ago today on Saturday January 7, 1989 with Gilbert Gottfried, and that night's featured movies were Cheerleaders Beach Party, followed by Stuck on You!.

That is great to hear. It is a shame that he will not be appearing in the new USA UP ALL NIGHT episodes that Rhonda Shear is working on now. It would be great to see him at it again.

I think the reason is because he sees himself as a perfectionist, and he felt Up All Night was not up to his standards in comedy. That's the only possible conclusion I can have. What about you?

I really do not know. I have never met Gilbert Gottfried in person so I really cannot comment about that. It is a part of his beginnings that he should not forget because USA UP ALL NIGHT did help him to become a household name. I would not forget where I came from at all.

And same thing with Rhonda Shear. Nobody knew who she was, until she recorded her very first episode in December 1990 (aired January 4, 1991).

I remember seeing Rhonda Shear in an episode of The Dukes Of Hazzard and THE A-TEAM. That was when she had her natural hair color which is brunette instead of the blonde look. They were not major roles yet still she had appeared on those TV shows.

Robert, one other thing: Do you remember when Rhonda moved to New York City?

The Saturday version with Gilbert Gottfried was regularly shot in NYC from 1989 to 1998. But the Friday show changed locations. It started out in Los Angeles in Summer 1989, then moved to NYC in 1995.

According to Rhonda in a recent interview, USA Network, which was, and still is based in NYC, decided that it was no longer cost effective for them to commute to LA just to shoot some episodes with her. So they decided to have her do the show in N.YC from now on to keep her job.

Rhonda didn't actually move to NYC; rather, she commuted back and forth between LA and NYC Several years ago, she said that by 1998, she had grown tired of commuting back and forth between the two cities. I wonder if she would have left on her own terms, had the show continued going past 1998?

On top of that, her contract was not renewed, when she taped her first of a handful of episodes in 1998.
