The movie had a mid to late 80's hair metal theme

It's about a guys who works at a music shop who aspires to be the lead guitarist for the popular local rock band. He has a crush on the local "it" girl who only has eyes for the lead singer/guitarist of said local rock band.

The music shop guy finally gets his chance to prove himself to both the band and the girl when he is asked to play guitar at a party after the lead singer/guitarist hurts his hand. The party is being attended by a big time music exec.

At the end of the movie, the guy gets the girl. The local band gets a record deal, one the condition that the music store guy is the lead guitarist for the band.

The lead character looked kinda like Cobra Kai Johnny from the Karate Kid.

The lead singer/guitarist looked like Kip Winger
