Car crash and piano

Near the beginning of the film a car crashes and then people in a van drop the piano off. It was never addressed later. Could someone explain this to me? Either their interpretation or point out what I was missed. Thanks!

Coincidence..fate? Meaningless? Sandler's character chooses to take it and it seems to inspire him.

I'm not sure if anything has any specific meaning or significance in this film. And I don't say that in a negative way because I love this movie. Halfway through this movie if not earlier I stopped trying to figure out what is happening and what the scene is meant to say and just went with it. This is one of those movies imo that reels you in if you keep with it and makes you feel like you're experiencing everything.

The crash seems to foretell the crashing changes about to occur in Barry's life. The sounds of the harmonium seem to parallel Barry's evolution - the more "together" Barry gets his act, the less dissonant and cacophonic its tunes are. As Barry finds a degree of inner harmony... well, so does the harmonium.

Nice little symbolic touches.

You're reading too much into the little piano.

It seems pretty random to me, but perhaps its meant to serve a purpose?

PTA seems to give us these random moments in his films.

The car crash I think showed Barry his mortality and how unfulfilled his life was and that it could end any moment. After that he tries to fix up his life. He goes to the party which he usually never does. Tries to get professional help. He actually goes out with his sisters friends. He even starts telling the truth about his outbursts. The significance of the piano could have several meanings. Maybe normally he would never pick up a random thing out of the side of the road. After the car crash this is the first thing he does that is out of his safe zone. The piano is like Lena where it comes into his life unexpectedly.

The world is quiet here.

I think this is what it would've meant to anyone in a regular film but in this one, I thiink it goes to show how caught up in his own world Barry is. I can hardly believe that he noticed the car crash at all. Just as when Guzman drops the pallet and Lena has to ask Barry if he didn't have to check that. He's just so off the grid all the time.

reply

That's a good theory: he just didn't notice it, or did and immediately disregarded it as inconsequential.

It's also a bit like when you have a daydream and have a shocking thought, and then you snap back to reality. You are a little stunned by it but come back quickly.

You're reading way too much into the scene.

reply

Hey chief, there's lots of allegorical or symbolic references in many a movie scene, particularly a PTA movie...so just because you don't see it, doesn't mean others are 'reading too much' into it.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

reply

not saying there isn't symbolism, just that some are reading too far.

Surrealism. Art.

If ever there was a movie where one should not limit them shelves to not "reading something too far" this is it. What is too far anyway?

And these folks have provided some great ideas for that crash and little piano.

Great article about all the symbolism in this movie.

Bottom line is, the film is very deep and it will either frustrate you or bore you or you will take the time to appreciate it and fall in love with it.

Maybe I went into this movie willing to try REALLY HARD to love it and I have. First time, I liked it but I have seen it multiple times and now I think it's a classic imho.

as anderson puts so many references into his movies i wonder if music for a found harmonium by penguin cafe orchestra was an influence here?
