Why not fight the Morlocks in hand to hand combat?

Yeah I know they say 'but they'll take us first'... but the humans must have outnumbered the Morlocks 10:1, they could easily make some spears and bow/arrows, and made some good defenses. Those humans deserved to be eaten because of their cowardice and stupidity.

Well first off, Jeremy Irons can control their minds and weeded out the ones who fought back (as told by one of the characters).

Second, let's throw you into a lion pen and see you fight them hand to hand. Humans did not become the dominant species on the planet because we fought every beast in hand-to-hand combat.
