But we are all like Alex; trapped forever within a chain of causality with one decision unalterably flowing into the next once it's said and done. None of us can change past mistakes, or the loss of loved ones; that is the message of the story...that we can only let go and move on.

He went back hundreds of times and Emma died every time. The one they showed was her getting trampled by a horse.

The reason she always died is because her death is the reason Alex invents the time machine, therefore if he ever managed to save her....then he would not have invented the time machine in the first place...so, he could not have saved her...and so on.

Heard about that, but didn't know he went back hundreds of times.

I remember him saying something like 'every time I go back it's the same thing' so we do know it was more than once but didn't quite catch that it was hundreds.

So... how come she was set to die that very same day? Sure she was bound to die sooner or later, but why like that?

reply

No, no, no. If you listened to the commentary, you'd know that how many times they send Alex back to save Emma was a big issue with the movie makers. They joked that it would become like Groundhog's Day and they joked about whether they should drop a safe on her head.

The idea of him going back hundreds of times was an idea pitched and he was going to be shown disheveled with a 5 o'clock shadow. Instead, they cut the idea and had him simply mention it.

I guess the point was that everything really does happen for a reason.

This is gonna sound silly but instead of Alex keeping going back in time to save Emma, why could he just take her with him to the machine and go back to their future era?

reply

couldn't he take her with him, and go way back before the date she died to have time with her, over and over?

reply

Could he take her to the future?

Sure, in your movie. It's just made up, remember. Some ways of making it up make better movies than others.
