Proposed rewrite to cover enormous glaring plot hole.

(SPOILER WARNING)

NATHAN: You go off the reservation, I will not come after you.

TOM looks hurt, betrayed at this admission.

NATHAN: I'm just kidding, man. You go off the reservation, I'll do everything in my power to get you out of trouble. I'll forge my superior's signature, I'll irresponsibly use CIA and American military resources, I'll ruin myself financially. I will throw away my long and distinguished career, and possibly that of everyone I've ever worked with. I'll even go so far as to start an international incident--yes even risk putting our nation at war for you. Understand?

TOM: Gee, thanks, buddy. Can I buy you a latte?

NATHAN: Only if it's more than twelve years old!

The two laugh uproariously, then leave the rooftop, arm in arm.

reply

Uh, what you're doing is not "fixing a plot hole" but removing a "change of heart" plot thread.

Its not a plot hole its the entire plot of the movie. It shows that Nathan has a heart after all and that yes he will do things, even illegal things to help a friend even if it means taking huge risks. You change this and the movie is about 30 minutes long.

Nathan: Tom Bishop was captured by the Chinese and is going to be executed?

CIA Guys: Yup

Nathan: And you guys aren't going to do anything about it?

CIA Guys: Nope.

Natahn: That sucks, well I'm off. Last day and all. Got a plane to catch to the Bahama's you know. If it's OK with you guys I think I'll duck out a bit early.

CIA Guys: No problem. Enjoy your retirement.

THE END.

Yup, you're right, that would be a much better movie.

I am sure these type of deals go down all the time. The difference with this movie is that while Muir used his political position to influence the rescue, he also used his own money to finance it. Bishop deserved to be rescued by the U.S. government. Muir made it happen because he was/felt responsible for Bishops situation.

It was Muir who sent Bishop's girl to prison, so the scenario is different.

Watch the movie again; especially Muir's exchange w/ Duncan: Muir tells Duncan that Bishop had already foreseen his own rescue & "piggybacked Sideshow." The Muir character doesn't simply have change of heart (altho that's integral): he takes the opening Bishop has left by using an existing op. as a cover for his going "off the reservation."
It's a complex movie; a point that many "fans" here miss.

This is why it's a good movie. It's not all spoon-fed to you.
