It was with this movie when Brad Pitt and Robert Redford worked together, that Brad Pitt began emulating Robert Redford. Pitt has used Redford as a model for himself ever since. Now, when you see Brad Pitt in a film, what you see is a version of Robert Redford. Moneyball is a perfect example. Pitt looks, acts, and sounds just like Redford. I'm not saying it's not a bad thing. Pitt has become a better star as a result. Just saying it's become pretty obvious.
I really think the two have been "using" each other for years. Robert Redford cast Brad Pitt as the prodigal son, Paul Maclean, in "A River Runs Through It". This was a great movie, but you just got the feel that Redford envisioned himself as Brad Pitt's character, rather than just the narrator. Paul was kind of the hero/anti-hero. He was the best fly fisherman, had all the friends/girls, rebelled against society & wrote about it eloquently.
Same thing with this movie, and I agree with you that Pitt has been a better actor since. The glaring thing for me was Pitt using the name 'Bishop'. This was the same name that Redford had in 'Sneakers'.
You may be right, it may have begun with "A River Runs Through It," when they first worked together, and Redford may have gotten Pitt's attention that way at that time. In fact it makes sense that it happened that way. But in Pitt's movies between ARRTI (1992) and Spy Game (2001), I personally don't see that much of Redford in Pitt. But after they worked together again in the latter, that's when it became evident to me in the way Pitt projects himself.
I was just about to make similar post. Pitt imo does remind me of the young Redford. Both loved by women because of their looks, both stars and tbh loo wise when Pitt was younger and you watch Redford back in his big leading role days you could say that they have similarities.
I havent seen this movie, but i could for example believe by looks alone if a movie where Redford would play Pitt father that they are indeed relatives. Something about them is similar.
The Hollywood press types had been comparing Pitt to Redford for years already. I thought Snatch Oceans 11 Fight Club and The Mexican were actually against that style and was also when I started likening him.
