I laughed pretty hard at that one.

@ people saying Muir would go to prison.
He's a super spy, with lots of friends. You don't think he knows how to evade cops and get out of a country? Get real.

@ people saying it wasnt a happy ending
Elizabeth and Bishop got out of prison, are obviously happy to see each other and would be totally free after an incident like that.

Well, it's kind of bittersweet, because while muir finally undoes the great wrong he did to bishop sending his one and only to a chinese prison, he loses his well deserved retirement and pension.

But dinner out was pretty cool:)

emu: not necessarily. The government doesn't like to air its dirty laundry. They won't want it to get out that they have agents going all rogue, especially two agents, especially two agents messing around with China. In the end, the CIA will cover its ass, and Muir will ride off into the sunset.

I don't think so.... The helos land, Tom's face gets treated, Lizzie gets some nice clothes, then Wiley's phone rings.
It is the President of USA.
"A small Chinese warship is approaching Penghu. When it docks you will take Bishop and Hadley to the Captain's cabin. He will then phone me."

The Chinese response to this outrageous violation or their sovereignty is to offer the USA two choices. 1. Hand over those two, and the base Commander, or 2. The entire Penghu Base will be flattened. Wiley is in return for the prison guards killed in the rescue. When the ship leaves, the three are summarily executed and the bodies weighted and put overboard.
Nothing is released to the Press.
I know it is only a movie (Brilliant all the way through) but if the CIA can casually kidnap Hadley and consign her to a dreadful existence, then anything is possible....ie, my sequel conjecture

Near the end... the helos land on the prison roof.
Am I the only one who can see someone guiding the helo in? Oh, of course, Chinese aviation rules require a night landing on an unlit prison roof to be guided in!!!

...on second thoughts... the alternative ending shown in the bonus of the DVD does show guys killing the prison guards on the roof, so, they would then guide the helos in.
But then we ask... how did they get into the prison compound, into the building, up to the roof? Not all things need to be explained? So, it is not really an error.
