Muir's Life After The C.I.A

so he gave up his life savings, he no longer has a job, and hes got no wives to support him...isn't he screwed? how is he going to go to the Bahamas or retire with no money, did they hint anything that i missed or his seriously just screwed over

reply

I don't think they told us the exact amount of his portfolio on the stock exchange when he emptied it out. The only number that mattered was that it matched the cost of the property in the bahamas he was looking at so he could tie up the story to the money being used for that not the power outage in china.

Furthermore, We never got the whole truth on Muir. This sort of 'Unreliable narrator' so to speak while it keeps us following a story it not ever gauranteed to be giving us the truth. In the film he outsmarts his younger-generation of CIA ops, He also outsmarts us in this way.

The full picture was never painted - nor should it be - it adds to his character. We love him at the end, but really we don't know anything about him. His birthday? His wives? nothing. Was it Kappler who said, "it's not like it's your money." That kind of tell us that it's not his life savings at all.

cheers, you weren't screwed over - we all were!

reply

Biz don't you think he meant that it was agencies money?

reply

Yes, he meant agencies money.

reply

actually they did say that his entire savings were what was transferred to china. but that was just what he had saved up
he just retired from the C.I.A
the average C.I.A earn 105 thousand a year and that is as of 2010
the movie is taking place in the past so his salary was probably a lot less but none the less the same accounting for inflation so its safe to assume that he would still get a good retirement

reply

white it is all how you look at it. He saved them. Some things are more important than money.

reply

I don`t think that Muir`s actual life savings is $282,000 on his retirement day from the CIA in 1991. Muir is a guy who gets the job done. And he is always abroad, so not much time to spend a lot of his own money, I guess. The other guys will believe this life savings if he had "four wives", which may had been in his plan by saying my life savings to make the story more believable to them. Also it seems he had no kids, and he owns a Porsche. No, I don`t think he`s screwed, whether the money was his or not.

reply

If Muir was so smart to conceive and execute such a rescue mission in just one day.... for sure he can get back his savings or a compensation.

The Singularity is coming!

reply

It wasn't even really his savings. It was just assets that had been joint owned by him and that MI-6 operative in China. I assume it was stocks and a small property or apartment that was used as a field-office in Hong Kong.

reply

No. It was it's life savings, the MI6 just thought it's agency money.

HE'D BE IN JAIL FOR LIKE THREE CONSECUTIVE LIFE SENTENCES.

reply

Hes just forged the documentation to make a military commander break into a chinese prison which resulted in probably several chinese casualties and would put the countries on the verge of war with each other... i think theyd want to execute him

reply

There are no Chinese casualties in Dinner Out. In the forged document, which is shown very clearly, the rules of engagement disallow any killing.

reply

There are a set of cut scenes, scenes that did not make it to the cinematic version of Spy Game, that can be seen on the DVD Special - among these scenes is a more comprehensive, and violent, act of the SEAL's taking the prison. This involve them cutting one Chinese prison guard's throat, and being in an extensive fire fight which results in the potential KIA of several Chinese prison guards.

reply

If "Diner Out" failed, probably. But it didn't. They would have to shut every one up (Bishop, Muir, Elizabeth, Commander Wiley's outfit, Duncan). Theses guys are bureaucratic pussies. That is way to be much heat for them to bring down. They just gotta sweep it under the rug and move on.

reply

no he wouldn't they were willing to let a man die just because he went off on his own this man got him out. the bureaucrats would not have wanted the paper work

reply

Muir within those 24 hours showed that he had more intelligence or at least more guile than all the others in the room put together.
Yes , i'm sure it probably was his life savings, but he is intelligent enough to recover it all within a short time.
It was a tough call for him but he knew what he was doing. Like he said

"Noah built the ark before the rain".

A guy like Muir would have a backup plan.

reply

agree.
i believe it was his life savings. one of the reason why this movie was so touching. he gave his all to save Tom.

i don't think that he would have a backup plan at that time, but since Muir is such a intelligent guy. he can always find a way to earn money.
no worries.

reply

It was his life savings.

There is proof of this at two points in the film: First when he is negotiating with the Chinese guy who has the authority to turn off power to the island. He goes backwards and forwards and he ends up giving him as much as he had in his account (282,000). Second was when his contact in Hong Kong said "it's not like it's your own money" he pauses and looks depressed for a second or two.

Also I think he did actually plan to buy that place in the Bahamas when he retired, which was 282,000 so it stands to reason that he would have that in his account. Which incidentally backed up his story to his superiors when they found out about his wire transfer to the caymans.

reply

Nathan is already in the Bahamas after the CIA.Also,I do believe that he has more money than $282,000.Aside from that, he also will be away from spy life considering the actions of his last day in the CIA.

reply

exactly but its not like he is now broke
because he just retired his retirement plan with the c.i.a would definitely be enough to live by

reply

Yeah and he still has that bad ass Porche, he could even use that as an asset to get himself a wife :P

reply

His Bahama property was worth 282000 dollars. This is the exact amount he spent on bribe. If he spent all his money on this property, he would be left with no money to live off also. So he had to have some more not only to buy his new house, but to live afterwards.

I'm pretty sure it was all of his money and the idea is that the CIA don't find him after he's left Langley. He's just demonstrated that he's a better agent than anyone in the conference room, so he'd have more than enough intelligence to evade capture.

"Dont you think it was odd? after Muir just told Tom Bishop never go out of your way for others.Muir also said if he goes off the reservation, he will not come after him. After the events in Beirut , if my pupil would tell me that "hes through with me and doesnt want to end up like me", I doubt I would be going out of my way to save him and his fanatic girlfriend."

Remind me never to rely on you in a pinch.

"heres another thing, .I would think that once the agency puts it all together( which i have no doubt they will, wouldnt they come and arrest Muir for not only forging the directors name on an unauthorized op? (the evidence is Idue to Commander Wiley talking to Muir about Operation" Dinner Out on the phone, im sure the agency knows that Muir set the op up ordering a rescue team of navy seals killing chinese soldiers in the process surely causing a diplomatic problem while rescuring bishop and hadley) muir may end up in jail"

He may but I'm guessing the CIA would rather just forget the whole thing rather than let it get out that they were willing to let one of their own be executed jut to cover their behinds.

reply

he knows how the agency works and in no way shape or form will they bring charges up against him because it would be PR suicide

reply

it was his money that was the entire point. but he would not be broke because he just retired so he would have been getting a monthly check for the rest of his life

reply

he creates such a mess everything may be swept under the rug internally and he may be allowed to keep his government pension (and he gets social security) if he keeps quite about the embarrassing incident; no one would want him going on talk shows, writing a book, congressional hearings, etc. And he is so smooth he could find a wealthy widow to marry. Soothing things with the Chinese would be much harder diplomatically but that is really the country's problem, not his (although he may have to be punished to make amends). As another poster said, his goal was to help others even at the sacrifice of himself so they leave it ambiguous what will happen to him.
