Are there really?
Are there really try outs for the majors? I thought you had to be drafted and scouted.

shareYeah. The team in the movie, the Devil Rays, have tryouts about 12 times a year. Usually they are across the country, I know there are tryouts annually in New Hampshire, Tampa Bay and New York. There is information on it at Devilrays.com
shareGeez. The tryouts are NOT for the major league team but for the organization!
The Devil Rays organizations holds tryouts not with the expectation of finding someone to play the next day on the major league team, but to find a prospect with the potential to perhaps do so someday. Scouts cannot be everywhere and prospects slip through the cracks, Thus TRYOUTS!
A player lucky to be spotted at the tryout is signed as a free agent and usually assigned to play in one of the class A or rookie leagues in which the major league team has an affiliate team. (ie, the Lansing Lugnuts are a class team affiliated with the Chicago Cubs).
If you watch the movie you will see how Jimmy Morris has to work his way through the various levels of the minors. (Though if memory serves right he started in Double AA ball.)
Wow.
...Dude, nobody thought you go right into the majors. I'm well aware of that. I was just curious if the team actually held tryouts.
