It appears to me the only way this event occured is that it was the D-Rays who picked him up. I mean no other team would be so desperate to pick up an old rookie like that. BTW, 100 more losses this year for the D-Rays and the White Sox will win 100.
Remember these names: Delmon Young, B.J. Upton, Wade Townsend, Jorge Cantu, Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, Johnny Gomes, Joey Gathright and Jeff Niemann. It's fashionable now to bash the D-Rays, but just wait. Once Naimoli is ousted, and new ownership commits more money to keeping those guys on my list, the Rays will be the ones doing the bashing. I can't wait to be the one to say I told you so. Remember those names, trust me.

I hope you're right. I'm tired of seeing the same two teams come out of that division year after year. Upton's going to be a stud. Joey Gathright's like Eckstein on steroids-- uh... well, you get my point. ;-) Baldelli I'm not too sure on, though. I'm not saying he's going to be a washout or anything. He's plenty young and if he's healthy he's got a long career ahead of him.... but I can't see him being any more than a dependable 6 or 7 hitter. If he proves me wrong, however, so be it. That's why I love baseball.

I believe that the poster was pointing out the fact that only a team with a serious losing record would have signed Morris as a publicity stunt. They were losing anyways so throwing in an aging player with no talent would not hurt them. None of the teams in a penant race would have considered using Morris, and the pitcher's dreadful performance over his very short "career" proved them right. But you certainly were right about the D-Rays! Upton and Crawford had a fantastic year, and Pena had a career year, and Kasmir is among the best young pitchers in the majors! The D-Rays will be an exciting team to watch next year!
What was a more obvious stunt was the copycat 37-year-old rookie pitcher the Marlis dug up in 2000. His name was Joe Strong, and his big league career was about as brief and unremarkable as Morris' except for the age factor. Strong didn't have the dramatic comeback story, though, and he continued to knock around in the minors until 2004.
As the OP of this thread 3 1/2 years ago, let me just say I'm shocked by the Rays this year. I think they will pull it off and I'd like to see them do it as it would be a great story. Plus I just hate all east coast teams that ESPN jacks off to.
