Does anyone know if the real Jimmy Morris actually gave his dad the ball, or was this just a movie stunt? Frankly, if a dad treated his child like Jimmy's movie father did, why would he deserve his first game ball? He should give it to his son or someone else more supportive of his career.
The father/grandfather DOES have a relationship with his grandson -- who undoubtably ended up with the ball not that long after. I don't know if he did give it to the grandfather in real life, but as someone who has been all 4, son, father, grandfather and grandson.... It was the perfect thing to do. Much was made about this relationship in the movie without cloying speeches and/or discussions with the wife and mother to do it. The main character admitted, by the way, that it wasn't all the grandfather/father's fault.
People are sometimes blessed by a long enough life that they can undo or redo things yet they throw that opportunity away. I "reconnected' my psrents at the end of their lives and I am glad I did it. My Dad's differences with my Mom should not have been allowed to keep him from speaking with my children as it did. My sons went through some terrible times and it did not help that he "disappeared" at one point and stayed out of their live for a decade. Right after he disappeared I almost died from a burst appendix and I think this caused one kid to adopt a "don't trust anybody -- not even God, it's all just a con" outlook. Don't let something or someone who hurt you make you make things worse by holding on to your bitterness.
