-How did Sy know that William and Maya had ordered room service in the first place? Did I miss something?
-The photo that Sy got off the market stall, (the old photo of a women) he said to Nina that, that was his mother, was it his mother, or did he just say that to make himself feel better, and if so, why would he lie about that?
-At the very end of the movie, when Sy's camera ends up having only photos of "the little things" as opposed to the pictures of the other characters pretending to have sex, I interpreted it as Sy not having actually TAKEN pictures of the couple, but really taking pictures of the room itself, on purpose - so that the pictures wouldn't get out, but instead he would just be giving them what he feels they deserved. However, on a couple other websites I have found the ending interpreted as Sy having hidden or disposed of the film that he took the lewd photographs with. Are either of these considered to be "correct"? ----------------------- *I know that I am stupid but when I look around me I feel a lot better.*

Sy didn't know for sure. He just took a chance, given that Will & Maya were there at a 'common' lunch hour time. If Maya had responded "But we didn't order any room service!" I bet Sy would have run a scam on her to try to suss out their room number. People often give out information without thinking about it.

Sy was desperately lonely, he had no family and he wanted to bond with people....especially the Yorkins. So he purchased a photo that had a pleasant, smiling nostalgic looking woman on it..... so he could pretend to people that the photo was his mom.

This was something the film mentions the answer to only once, and its at the VERY START of the film....and I think this hurts the movie plot very much! To answer your question, Sy DID take nasty photos of Will & Maya. The detective mentions this at the very start of the film, that they processed the first roll of film they found....and 'they aren't very pretty pictures." Th detective then says they processed the second roll, and Sy asks if he can see them. They refuse, saying they are 'evidence' too. This second roll of photos are the ones the detective relents, and lets Sy see & put down on the table. They are photographs of what Sy mentions: The *little things* in life. Everyday things, that no one tends to notice.
Hope that helps! I love this film, its one of Williams' best.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus. Didn't he discover America? Penfold, shush.

That's because this is one of those movies where they show the end at the beginning and then the whole movie is actually a flash back memory. You're expected to recount the opening scene, the police station interview, after you've watched the movie. I hate when they do that.

Regarding the photo of the woman - during the food court scene on the commentary track, the director says “Poor guy has to invent an alternate family for himself because the real one is just too horrifying for him to deal with.”
