Such a great film in so many ways but also frustrating in it's missed opportunity (Spoilers)
This has become the ultimate escape type of a movie for me and I'm sure many guys, of all ages. (I'm in my mid 40's). It's not porn and it's not a teen gross out film, despite the premise and what the trailer is designed to try to tell people. What it is is the most well executed romance I've ever seen in a film, but also a film that goes a bit sideways down the stretch.
It's almost like the film makers wanted to make a really sweet romance around the premise of a teenager meeting a girl with a dark past, but were were pressured to make more of a teenage wacky sex flick by the studio.
The biggest asset of the movie is Elisha Cuthbert as Danielle. Good God, she's so hot and so believable as both The Girl Next Door and the porn star. The hottest performance by an actress I've ever seen. I never get tired of watching her in the first half. The last half relegates ger to the sidelines while it turns into "The Wacky Adventures of Matthew". This COULD have been one of the all time great romantic movies from start to finish if they had played out the romance much more. Instead, that romance is totally rushed through into a brief montage clip; (best scene of the movie). The casting director nailed it. It has outstanding performances across the board and a really well executed romance with the most beautiful leading lady ever. With that, I would have loved to see a film that fully utilized that. The romance between Matthew and Danielle could have played out much much longer with the big discovery of her other life taking place in the final act and Matthew going to Vegas to win her back to close the film. Instead, the cat's out of the bag very early and after Danielle comes back to him, it's a lot of crazy silly stuff with Danielle/Elisha just cheering on her man.
Greatest Strengths:
1. The Casting is perfect and the acting is nearly flawless. As much as a scene stealer Elisha Cuthbert is, Emile Hirsch is amazing in his own right. I have a lot of respect for him after watching this more than a couple times. He really came Matthew. Timothy Elephant, Paul Dano, and the rest are all spot on.
2. The soundtrack is exceptional and perfectly placed.
3. The writing. There are so many memorable lines. "I love the way you looked at me"; "I know you you really are and you're better than this"; "Dude! I Know"
4. Direction. Greenfield knew what he had with his 2 stars and did an amazing job of letting Cuthbert and Hirsch do the talking with their eyes. The romantic montage in the beginning has some amazing shots of just Danielle's eyes. The combination of Elisha opening her eyes while listening to music with Filter's Take a Picture playing floors me every time.
5. Elisha Cuthbert. I have never seen an actress portray sexy and cute at the same time with such ease. She also manages to have like 20 different looks in the film with each of them managing to be so hot in their own way. Sexiest eyes and eyebrows ever. My favorite scenes of hers are the ones that utilize those eyes. The way she looks at Matthew throughout the film just blows me away.
Most of the flaws occur as a result of what I feel is an ending that's a bit dragged out and unnecessary.
This film is so great in so many ways, but frustrating in it's many directions it takes and lack of focus, but those strengths far outweigh the flaws, making it a very special escape movie for me. Ignore the 56% on Rotten Tomatoes and the trailer. Give it a shot. It has a lot of heart and a lot of Elisha Cuthbert.
