Was Brenda a real person? Or was she fictional for the movie? Because I've heard Frank Abagnale Jr. tell his story in quite a few interviews, but he never mentions Brenda or he almost becoming her husband.

There's a featurette on the second disc of the 2-Disc DVD edition where Frank Abagnale mentions her. She was based on a real person but she was called Rosalee, or something like that. Frank told her his true identity and she subsequently called the authorities. When he returned later, they were waiting for him but he managed to escape.
Good to know, because in the film it seems the authorities pressured her into "giving up" Frank, which would not be surprising knowing how easy it would be for the FBI to exert such pressure on a basically naive and fragile kid like Brenda.
They probably said something like, "Lead us to him and he will be safe or else he will probably be shot on sight".
Ay, figures. Poor guy. He loved her, but he couldn't tell her the truth or he'd go to Jail and lose her. It's a shame he never saw her again so he could apologize.
