Question about Orthodox Judaism

In reference to the scene where Larry is stuck up on a ski lift with the unmarried Orthodox girl, she tells him that if they are still together after sundown, it will be against a law of Judaism mentioned in the Torah. She asks Larry to jump, at which point he steps completely out of his Orthodox Jewish accent and says, "What, are you *beep* nuts?"

Since he won't do the sensible thing of jumping and risking his life and limb, the girl winds up jumping, allowing Larry to continue dining on a meal of edible panties while realizing that poor Richard Lewis won't be getting a kidney after all.

So my question is this, in a similar situation in real life and she couldn't jump or escape in any other way, what would be the consequences? Say the ski lift was three miles up or directly over rocks or a spiked fence or perhaps the couple was stuck in an elevator? What would be the result for the unfortunate single girl? Would she be shunned by her family and the Orthodox community? Or was this law exaggerated for comedic effect?

I was raised in orthodox jewry, it is a funny world.

A lot of girls do take that rule very seriously but there are only 3 commandments that a Jew is allowed to risk their own (or anybody's) life for and this is not one of them.
I've never heard of someone being shunned for it because there's such a varying opinion on how serious it is but most orthodox communities make a big deal about avoiding situations but don't make a big deal if it happens.
What a girl might do is go to something called a mikva which is like a cleansing pool.

The jump is mainly for comedic affect.
