I love Seinfeld but I can't stand this show

It's just not funny, at least not for me, I love Seinfeld but I can't get into this show.

I can understand that. I've been watching it on Amazon and am on season 4. It's like making a sitcom called Costanza. I find some of it funny and some of it cringe-inducing. I like Cheryl. Suzie's so coarse she makes me smile. Jeff is cool. He gets good guest stars too but David himself is a real idiot. Ultimately though that's the point.

Well I love Curb but can't stand Seinfeld. How's that for you?

reply

That's fine by me. Unlike you and the OP, I like them both. Larry David does too.

Don't try to get into it. I actually thought the show would be awful and now it is my favourite show.

Just try watching it after a while, expecting it to be total *beep* That might help you enjoy it.
If not, no big.

I only started liking it at the finale of S4 (I like the Producers, and found amusing Mel Brook's paralleling of the musical's plot, he cast Larry because he thought he's awful so the show will flow and he will make $ :D. And then in S5 it gets more silly in a fun way - Larry gets in trouble because his dog barks only at African Americans, he is happy when his firend's cousin gets shot because if he dies Larry won't have to donate his kidney to his friend, it feels more Seinfeldian and there are moments where I genuinely laugh.

I have seen 4 seasons of Seinfeld so far. I like it, but not as much as I enjoy CYE. It may change later tho.

With me its the other way round: I love CYE and absolutely loathe Seinfeld; it amazes me the fact that a mind like LD would create such a sh!t show like Seinfeld and then create and star in such a funny show like CYE. I tried to enjoy Seinfeld, but there is something about Jerry Seinfeld that is just wrong... He's so painfully unfunny it hurts, and I'm not a difficult person to please when it comes to laughter, as long as the material is remotely funny, not like Date Movie and such crap alike. Whenever the guy appears in CYE I immediately begin to cringe and hope for the worst. He's just that awful!

There is something indeed really annoying about Seinfeld.

I'm another one who is the opposite; imo Curb Your Enthusiasm is one of the all time best TV comedy shows, while I never liked Seinfeld.
- The main reason is the casting. I could see that the writing in some Seinfeld episodes had a lot of effort put into it but except for Dreyfus, the main cast was not very good to me.
- Larry David up to today is a top notch TV comedian with his Bernie Sanders bits on SNL.
Jerry Seinfeld? I've never considered him to be good as a TV comedic actor.
Same with Jason and Richards.

With CYE the casting works as a series of straight characters for Larry; Cheryl, Garlin, Essman, along with several supporting bits from Richard Lewis, Ted Danson, J.B Smoove and many others.

I can't fault the writing in both series. It's clever but for me only CYE has the cast to make it work as a comedy.

BB ;-)

it is just in my opinion - imo - 🌈

Seinfeld is, after all, a sitcom with a laugh track, as genius as the writing might be at times. CYE has more freedom, basically zero censorship and political correctness which opens up a world of opportunities for jokes and even whole storylines. Jerry is argubaly as cynical as Larry, if not more so (for example, he never settles down and is shown to actually be unable to), but they couldn't go too far with this and as a result some episodes were simply boring. The dark plotline with George accidentally killing his girlfriend and then not giving a damn was probably the highest they could reach HBO levels. CYB's worst episodes are still memorable, because of the social awkwardness Larry always gets into. Besides, David is a much better actor than Jerry and he makes all these ridiculous arguments look very real. Most people would never go that far for petty things, but when they do, you know that's how they would look like.

Well said Jason. Seinfeld was good. But Larry David really let loose on CYE. I like Curb better.

reply

I loved Seinfeld, but CYE just grated on me after a while and I stopped watching. Think the difference is that, although the characters on both shows are narcissistic sociopaths, the actors on Seinfeld played them in such a way that they weren't mean spirited, which allowed you to not hate them. Such is not the case with CYE, and I just wound up hating Larry David's character, which killed the comedy aspect for me.
