Social

Larry David is kind of an enigma. He is known to dislike the "stop and chat". He often bungles in social situations. There's even a thread on here wondering if he is autistic.

Yet for all that, it strikes me that Larry is a very social guy. He talks to almost everyone he meets, not just incidental greetings, he actually engages them in conversation. He's really a very friendly guy, if you look at it.

He thinks about people no one else considers. He buys the surrogate mother a shower gift. He brings food to the limo driver.

And when he and Cheryl divorce, he has no shortage of girls to date.

Excellent observation. I think LD's character is marginalised by superior intelligence and very likely being on the autism spectrum. He seems not to understand social norms and misses social cues. Simply put, he doesn't really fit in to normal society.

As to his dating success...I think that is due to his wealth and fame.

Maybe so. But it always reminded me a lot of Jerry's dating life on Seinfeld. He seemed to have a new girlfriend every week. Of course, he was a celebrity playing himself too, so wealth and fame again. Elaine also had no shortage of suitors either - but she is an attractive woman, so... maybe I don't have a point here.

I've noticed that a lot of shows that take place in New York feature characters who are constantly finding new people to date. I know Curb takes place in LA, but Larry's from New York. A lot of people in New York, a lot of things to do, plus the lifestyle there seems to contribute to this kind of dating life.

Where I live, people tend to couple up more quickly and date each other longer. A more conservative area, I guess.
