Certain feel

Does anyone else think the movie commercials make it seem like it has a late 80s/early 90s vibe? Is it supposed to...

reply

Are you trying to say that all late 80s/early 90s movies were crap?

reply

No... nowhere did I mention that. I happen to be a huge fan of the 80's.

reply

Yeah with all the big hair, outfits they show in the previews, I can see why you might think that.

reply

well, it did sit on the shelf for 2 years (cause it blew!), so it's not that far off...

reply

Well, actually, no. It was put on the shelf due to hightened sensitivity to airline travel after 9/11. Airplane jokes weren't as funny when the burning twin towers and crater in Pennsylvania were still fresh in everyone's mind. Even to those who weren't even affected by those events, it was still a taboo to regard airline travel with humor. Now people have calmed down a bit and the studio is trying to salvage anything they can from this flick.

Systomfadwnchk,

The feel they were trying to achieve, wasn't an 80s thing. It was a throwback feel to the way airtravel used to be. Being a flight attendant used to be a career choice. It used to be glamorous. When Donna worked for Sierra Airlines her costume resembled Southwest's early days in the 70s. Then she made her way to the "top" which was purely fictional because in todays flying era, even first class to London is filled with whiney slobs who received free upgrades and treat the flight attendants like crap.

I thought this movie was going to be more of a farce, but it tried to be serious which is kind of confusing. There were a couple of things about this movie that did hit home for me. Not that it was a good flick or anything but I happen to be a pilot. And believe it or not I started out at an Express Airline in Cleveland. So, to me that part was hilarious because I actually said the same thing Donna did in the movie. I called Cleveland Purgatory, instead of a waiting room and it wasn't a one year wait for me, it was more like five.

The slam on Cleveland and Express were the only non fictional parts of this movie. Although the footage of Cleveland Hopkins wasn't real. Unless a mountain has sprouted out of the ground by the airport since I last flew in there. Which was about three weeks ago.

It was somewhat amusing for me, being in the business, and I went and saw it with a Flight Attendant. We laughed at some parts. For me, I felt like the movie was trying to reflect the Golden Age of flying in the present time. Either that or they were just trying to show airline life the way a lot of people falsely perceive our lifestyle.

I didn't hate this film but I should have waited to see it on HBO rather than going to the theater. The fact that Gwenyth, who I never really cared for, spends the whole movie in shorts or a skirt definately made it bearable. Damn, she looked sexy in this film. I wish Flight Attendants really looked like that.
