I've got a bad feeling about this...

I love Mike Myers. I think Gwyneth Paltrow is a great actress. But I do think Gwyneth Paltrow picks a few crappy movies every now and then. And I'm getting the feeling like this could be one of them. I'll tell you why.

I heard from a friend that Mike Myers is only on screen in this movie for about fifteen to twenty minutes. The trailer is making it look like he's starring in it. This is definitely not a good sign.

Usually when a movie is good, advertisers will take their time with the trailer and show the movie for what it is. But when a movie is bad, advertisers will do everything it takes to bring people into the theater, even if it does mean lying to people.

The trailers for this movie are making it seem like it's a crazy slapstick Mike Myers comedy, but at the same time a movie about a small town girl who wants to live out her dream. Now it's almost impossible to be both of these movies at once, especially since Mike Myers is only in about 20 minutes of the movie. So obviously there's some lying going on in the advertisement. Which isn't a good sign for how the movie will turn out.

If the movie was truly good for what it was, I don't think the ads would have to focus on Mike Myers' character more than Gwyneth Paltrow's character, especially since Paltrow's character is what the movie is actually about. I mean look at it, Christina Applegate is barely mentioned, and she's starring in the thing.

Ultimately I think the advertisements will kill this movie. The trailers are advertising two different movies, and unfortunately the people who want a crazy slapstick comedy won't see it because it looks like a soft chick flick kind of comedy, and the people who want to see a soft chick flick kind of comedy won't see it because it looks like a crazy slapstick comedy.

I also feel like this movie will be a trainwreck.

Does anyone feel the same way? I haven't really heard anyone talk about this here so I thought I'd bring it up.

My first feeling, upon seeing the ad for this, was "did Mike Myers lose a bet"? I mean, everything he's in is usually such high quality, and this just looks unbelieveably stupid. And you're right - from the trailers, it looks like he's the major star.

So what are you saying...A marketing department has lied to us? I have no response to that.

I never got the sense from any of the trailers that Mike Myers is the star. He IS, however, one of the most prominent costars in the movie, and most people I've talked to who've seen it thought he was "hilarious." I, personally, didn't find a single one of his gags or jokes funny. I thought his character was stupid, unfunny, and sleep-inducing.

I feel the same way as you. What possessed her to pick this movie to do? I don't know, I just think people should know that when they win and academy award that gives them what I like to call "actor credibility" and when an actor/actress does a movie such as this - that looks fun, but really has no point- then it isn't helping to keep up the 'actor credibility'idea. Well I hope that I am wrong- I can see how actors sometimes just want to 'branch out' and try knew things but...I don't know about this one. Maybe I am wrong...we'll
see....

I also didn't get the impression that Mike Meyers was the star. Sure, he's in the trailer a few times. But his name is announced LAST. But I will agree that I don't have a good feeling about this one. No advance screenings is always a bad sign. And man are they running the commercials to death or what!?

I think the main problem with this movie is they marketed it as a straight-up comedy. There were a few moments where I was definitely laughing (that whole "WE'RE GONNA DIE!!" thing was pretty good, if you ask me), but I felt this was more of a light romantic comedy. I don't remember Mark Ruffalo being in the trailer, nor do I remember ANY mention of Gwyneth falling in love. All I saw was a bunch of the funnier scenes. I think if they'd said "romantic comedy" and played the "boy meets girl" angle in the previews the movie would've been better accepted and got better reviews, but the viewers were improperly set up.
