Why was Mike so compelled to listen to the tapes?

Why was Mike so compelled to listen to the tapes? I can understand being curious. But it became an obsession with him. There were a few examples of this, but the most outrageous was when they were actively looking for Hank. Hank was supposed to be long gone, but then mysteriously appears. They're trying to track him down and then...

Nah, I'm going to go down into the tunnels to listen to more tapes. What? Why? He's not even remotely curious about Hank at that point?

I think he was obsessed with the tapes because he was troubled and tormented, which made him susceptible to the evil influence of the tapes. And I think being obsessed is what caused him to be indifferent to the Hank's reappearance.

Mike was type of person "Simon" knew he could cast a spell over. Still get the shivers when Simon says...I live in the weak and the wounded.

What the other guys said, above, plus, I took it Mike's wavering over returning to law school is what made him weak as his previous failure wounded him.
