Movie is not about psychological issues

If it wasn't for that Simon then it could been something else. But having simon on both mary and gordon basically tells that place is haunted supernatural force that went to new victim. Gordon didn't go crazy because of mental issues but rather paranormal one instead.

If mary and gordon were somehow connected like relatives then it would be way more intresting because it could have been genes releated. Well it would still be bit too far off but could be possible who knows.

It also went really slow too, there is too much things in this movie could cut off and maybe something more releated added. I think this movie could have had more potential with story too. I'd give it 7/10

And it is not strange to you that possessed demons and victims display textbook mental disorder behavior?? What is Billy?! a good ghost?!

Gordon had problems prior to visiting asylum,so...

it seems like it's left purposely open to interpretation

Gordon never listened to the tapes (that we saw) and so the Simon personality manifesting in him suggests supernatural elements, supported also by Simon claiming to be an outside force rather than an alter

there are two possible explanations for this though that support the psychological
1: Gordon did at some point listen to the tapes but it wasn't shown. possible but seems unlikely, especially as he first heard Simon on their initial inspection and he killed his family before the sealed evidence box was opened
2: Gordon was already familiar with Mary's case before accepting the job. There's various mentions of former patients being turned out onto the streets. It's possible the better functioning ones may have managed to integrate into society, perhaps eventually taken on a job that would send them back to the hospital and re-trigger their condition
