Running time varies by region?
I discovered this film a couple of months ago and immediately became obsessed with it - something about it just drew me in, in a way that few other movies have. I've since watched it maybe 6 times since then and consider it one of my favourite movies, and easily one of the best horror movies I've seen.
Couldn't help but notice something odd though: the first version I watched (which I downloaded via a torrent) the total running time was about 95 minutes. Downloaded two other versions later that were both around 100 minutes which is the "correct" runtime.
Bought a copy of the DVD (Region 4 - Australia) and it is the same length as the original version I watched. The credits roll at about 1 hour 31 mins and 50 seconds into this version. I checked the longer version and the credits roll 3-4 minutes later... I'm not exactly sure what is missing from the R4 version but am curious to work it out, nothing really stands out as absent considering I've watched it several times now, but unfortunately the DVD I got skips a bit during one scene and presumably skipped to the next chapter, so it's hard to judge if I missed anything.
I thought if anything were to be cut it probably would have been the Patricia Gillard story but that seems to be in tact. I think it's something in the first 20-25 minutes of the film based on how in the R4 version, I'm pretty sure (not 100%) that Mike starts listening to the first tape at around the 23 minute mark, where it's more like 28 or so minutes into the film on the R1 version.
Sidenote: The R4 DVD also lacks any decent special features, there's nothing but trailers and "talent profiles" for the cast, which basically just lists their filmography up to 2001... yay. I'm going to have to get an R1 copy to eventually see the deleted scenes, listen to the commentary etc.
Curious if anyone else is aware of this and knows what was cut from the 95 minute version...
