Isn't the rating low for a cult classic?

Regarded as a great film by many so why is the rating so low? Do you guys recommend that I should see this film? Good and scary?

I like to consider my self a "movie buff" or whatever they call themselves nowadays...I usually like almost everything I see and can see some good in almost everything that is made.

I didn't see the trailer , went in blind expecting a good phychological thriller the likes of the Psycho or The Shining....

What It ended up being for me... was boring and at times predictable.

I was left feeling bored and at times unattached to all the characters. At the end of the movie instead of being wide awake and wanting to rant and rave and discuss the movie with others... I felt drained and wanted to forget I watched it.

But that was just me.

Movies are subjective. Some people like them, others don't.

Well really that's what makes a cult film. Something generally ignored/disliked by the mainstream with a small, specific, enthusiastic audience. Session 9 seems to fit that. If you like psychological horror that is quite light on the action and gore but heavier on atmosphere and creepiness then you might like this. I'd describe it as more unsettling than scary. I gave it a 9/10.

Ratings in IMDB aren't a measure of film quality, as can be seen by numerous examples (''300'' on top of my head)...

The biggest problem is movies of all kinds are seen by a bunch of idiots...

So as a result, many good movies will have lower ratings than deserved (Session 9, The Game) and many idiotic movies will have higher ratings than deserved (Argo, 300, Top Gun, Hurt Locker...)

This is considered a cult classic for horror fans?
That's why horror films get worse each year...

I wouldn't say a movie not even 12 years old is a "classic". Time will tell if it holds together and become a true classic.

I think if you like atmospheric and psychological horror, it is a good watch. But if you think it is your regular "maniac in an hold asylum" story, you are up for a deception.

reply

No one said it is. It's a psychological thriller/horror not a slasher flick.
Still i don't think i could even consider it a good one.

reply

Because people are sad, pedantic *beep* who let things such as plot holes and such get in the way of their enjoyment of a film as great as this?

reply

I don't think plot holes was the main cause. Boredom was.

reply

Um are you saying you disregard plot holes?? If so you're quite the moron.. I mean if a movie has big plot holes your not supposed to just ignore them.

reply

I said it wasn't the main issue not that i don't mind them.
What's up with people calling other names for having different opinions?

reply

What the hell is a "cult classic"?? There were not any cults in this movie.

reply

It's a horror film and since horror is inherently niche it tends to be rated lower by people who don't get it.

reply

The Event Horizon is another underrated 'cult classic.' I love both of these films

plot holes

Some people that don't understand films imagine plot holes in films that don't have any. I'm not suggesting that plot holes don't exist - I'm just saying that some people aren't as bright as they think they are, and miss story lines and plots. This film was well crafted, so I'm doubting it has plot holes.

Session 9

For one thing most people don't go for slow burn horror movies anymore. That's probably even more true now than it was fourteen years ago when this movie first came out. Mainstream audiences prefer loud brutality to psychological thrillers. I'm not sure why but that seems to be the way it is.

Two, this movie had the same timing problem as Donnie Darko. It came out just a few days after 9/11 so people had other things on their mind.
