What was Mike doing?

Not sure if I will get an answer since this board isn't active, buttttt
What was up with Mike? They were doing a huge job on a very limited time frame, and he was listening to tapes and taking notes? I honestly thought he might be a killer or one of those inmates who returned, because I can not understand why he was so fixated and slacking off. I guess if you believe that Simon was a demon or ghost then maybe Simon was influencing Mike, but of you believe that Simon is just a metaphor for a mental breakdown, what was Mike up to?

reply

Actually, the board is surprisingly active considering the movie is old and not a blockbuster.

Mike was just very interested in the case.He obviously already did a lot of research on the asylum, and it was more interesting to him than bonus money. When he discovered the tapes he just got carried away. Btw we needed someone to discover the tapes since the tapes are the answer, the explanation of what is happening with Gordon the whole time, which of course we are able to understand only at the end.

A movie from 2001 is old? Maybe to someone born in 1987 (like yourself) it is, but no, it is not old and while it may not be a blockbuster, it IS considered among horror fans to be one of the best horror movies ever made.

I like that explanation :)

It does feel a little bit forced, but I think the point is Mike is fascinated by crimes stories. And all the characters have personal problem that haunt them. Mike regrets his past choice of not becoming a lawyer.

Blue: Mike started out listening to the session tapes on his own time, after the work day had ended. On the day he was killed, he felt compelled to cheat the time clock and listen to the final sessions. The generator was killed by the entity, and Mike left the room without hearing session 9.

Actually the reason this board is surprisingly active is because this film appears on the lists of many horror fans when numerous film boards ask the question: what are your favorite horror films? Lots of horror buffs see this film as a cult classic, which is why it gets a lot of attention years later.

The generator was killed by the entity

What entity? This wasn't a ghost movie.

reply

Religious people like that poster believe in that sort of thing. He sees what he wants to see, rather than seeing what actually is.

reply

Actually simon speaking to Gordon while looking at Mary's chair and the changing of her voice suggest a demon. Of course non religious people are very quick to deny that possibility. They don't want to acknowledge anything that challenges their ideology.

THERE WAS NO ENTITY.

reply

That's your opinion.

reply

No, it's a FACT. There was no entity. And you can listen to the commentary by Brad Anderson and Steve Gevedon to reinforce that fact. This is a story about a mental breakdown by Gordon. The asylum and tapes are used more as a catalyst to push him over an edge he'd been hanging on for years as an asbestos cleaner who is stressed out, tired from a crying new baby that he loves, but didn't want, and he's remained cool for too long about eveything and is about to snap from the get go.

It's art, art can be interpretated as the observer sees fit.

reply

Why would you ask a question, while assuming no one would answer, yet people did, and you ironically never came back to acknowledge their responses to your post?

reply

Mike definitely was interested in listening to those tapes. For example, I work in a nursing home and get carried away when looking at pictures of my patients in there youth and listening to them reminisce about the good ol' days.
It's fascinating and that was the case with Mike. It also helped build the momentum of the storyline.
