Why is this film so popular?

So many lists for horror films mention this film as an underrated gem that's supposed to be creepy and scary. After all that talk I finally get around to watching it. The acting from everyone involved is mediocre at best and the film is extremely predictable to the point that you'd have to be something special not to figure out what's happening well before the end.

What's the big deal?

It has quality writing, acting, characters and atmosphere.

Unlike most modern horror movies.

Plus the cinematography is beautiful and dark. This is a psychological horror film.

Predictable? I don't believe you predicted the ending.

I agree with OP, I just saw this film and gave it a 6, I thought it was all a bit corny and the acting and writing was really average.

I'm baffled by some of the posts because they make it out to be really disturbing but personally I didn't find it scary/disturbing/unsettling at all.

On the whole I found it kinda disappointing, after seeing it rank so highly on so many people's lists I expected more from it.
