How is this not rated higher?

I can't believe this film doesn't hold at least a 7 rating on this site. I consider this Brad Anderson's (super talented writer/director) best film. Incredible ambiance, tension, mystery. Excellent performances too. I wish more modern day horror films aspired to these heights.

As a big horror fan, I was sad to recently read IMDB's top 25 ranked horror films of the modern age and see so many big budget (Conjuring, 28 Days Later) or goofy novelty flicks (Shaun of the Dead, Sweeney Todd, Tucker and Dale) get even more unnecessary exposure.

Come on...it's a lot harder/gutsier to actually try and disturb or scare an audience with something original.

This had genuine characters and it was genuinely unsettling. This is a gem.

In fact, I just finished it. Moved into the old sanitarium last week. Wondering if those tunnels are still underground.

You seriously live in the renovated building?

reply

I gave it a 9. It's a real horror movie...as in not so much scary as disturbing and unsettling.

SPOILERS********************************

I think the twist and somewhat abrupt ending left a bad taste in people's mouths. It seemed like the movie was leading up to something really big and ended up disappointing the average viewer.

I remember first seeing this when I was maybe 11 or 12 and thinking it wasn't scary. Then I saw it when I was 15 for a second time and started to really get into the atmospheric and psychological aspect of the movie.

It's too bad because I've noticed the rating go down over the years. I too question some the aspects of the twist for example if Gordon really killed his family towards the beginning of the movie then how is he able to go to work as if nothing happened at all. Guy must have one hell of a poker face. I understand he was losing it but he was acting way too normal on the first couple days of the job.

But I think the setting and atmosphere make up for any plot holes. It's rare to see a movie filmed at a location this authentic. Props were added but not a significant amount.

it doesn't bring anything new to the genre, movies like this have been made and have been made better

so many movies, so little time

Like being filmed in an actual abandoned Mental Institution? I don't think so.

Which movies are you those, pray tell?
