I'm Caribbean American and..

Somehow watching this I feel like I can relate !

I don't have any family from Greece yet I can relate to the feeling of being an outcast, seeking individuality even feeling ashamed of some parts of my family.
The feeling of falling in love and feeling supported then realizing you've been supported all along by family is amazing.

It's sad people see this as a racist film simply because they play with stereotypes. I guess they would say the same thing about Memoirs of a Geisha, Something New or even The Karate Kid but for the amount of stereotypical visuals in each of these movies there's an underlying message of the journey of moving from feeling abandoned to feeling totally accepted and the struggle to stay true to your convictions one way or another.

Just wanted to give a perspective from someone on the outside.

I'm Egyptian and I can completely relate. This film is sooo hilarious because of how similar it is to my culture: the crazy family, the loud and boisterous relatives, the exotic traditions, the festivities, practically everything in this film. I like the contemporary feel of this film, the fact that a woman holds onto her Greek culture and upbringings while growing up in America. It reminds me I'm not alone... I'm rarely into comedies, but this film just did it for me, maybe because I grew up around similar traditions. I also like the way the film pokes through rigid cultural practices through a very light hearted way.

I was born knowing I was special. I could even feel it within people's envy of me.
