Why did she wait until 30 to wear makeup?

Also seems like her personality completely changed too. Pretty unrealistic and bizarre.

How is it unrealistic?
She had no self-confidence and was raised in a family that doesn't support individuality, something she seemed to crave.
It's completely realistic that unhappy people with a lack of confidence will go without make up.

Once she started to assert herself, and get out in the world her confidence built. She attended school and started to find herself and happiness. With a new found sense of self she started to gain enough confidence to try make up, and do her hair, and make friends.
Finding herself would most certainly open up her personality.

People change, and if you think that is unrealistic or bizarre then I urge you to climb out of whatever cave you live in and experience society outside of yourself.

Not wearing makeup means someone is unhappy and has no self confidence? Maybe in Toula's case it did, but I would say a lot of the time it means the exact opposite.

reply

True. I only wear makeup for special events or going on job interviews. I use to wear it more in my youth, but then I developed adult acne. I need to consult a beauty expert regarding technique and the right colors.

a movie that is unrealistic and bizarre, I am thinking of a word....oh I know.... Entertainment!

The stuff that is realistic is called your life, and not many would pay to see that movie.

Ephemeron.

I have a friend who is 41 and never really wore make up. She was brought up in a strict controlling family like this one and her parents refused to let her wear make up in jr high and highschool. She lived at home for college so she still didn't wear make up. She was focused on her studies and didn't party so she felt no need. As an adult a few friends would suggest she wear make up but she'd just shake her head. She just felt she didn't need to wear it. She wore some make up when she got married for her wedding pictures but never really worn it since.

Many women don't wear make up because they want to look natural and feel comfortable with their looks. I myself at 40 rarely wear make up. My cheeks are naturally blushed, I have natural long eye lashes and my lips a natural pink so I don't like how lip gloss or lipstick make them look.

~For beautiful eyes look for the good in others, for beautiful lips speak only words of kindness~

i wondered that when i saw the film. Since her parents are supposed to be so keen to marry her off, why didn't they encourage her to make herself appear more attractive?

I'm 32 and barely wear make up, a bit of mascara once in a while and that's it.

reply

There's nothing wrong with wearing makeup nor is there anything wrong with not wearing it.

It's not for everyone. I don't wear makeup except for Halloween and for my families'wedding photos (i.e. brides maid, etc).

I'm 40 and I don't wear makeup, never have. Aside from lipstick.

I like my face and my skin the way they are, and I don't feel the need to 'accentuate' or 'hide' any feature of it.

The few times someone convinced to get 'done up' (for weddings, mostly), I thought I looked like a clown. One of those times I ended up removing all of it before I actually got to the wedding... :)

But I do understand that for Toula it was a matter of being able to control an aspect of her own life, doing something for herself.

It was all about starting to take the reins of her destiny.

I’m 45 and rarely wear make up. I didn’t care for it when I was a teen and young adult. I’ve worn it for a few weddings but other than that I don’t do make up.
