I still wonder about some things.

I've read the book and watched both movies years ago, but I can't recall what was really inside Rose Red. Was it a demon at the root of it all? Or had Ellen gone insane/evil over the years and turned into a monster? So she then needed people to fuel her building. I also had a theory that the house was on a different plane and that's why it was constantly changing on the inside. That the land it was built on was bad. The movie sort of hints that Ellen is insane from the STD she received as a honeymoon gift from her husband, and that she was heartbroken over years of disappointments. Other than that many were left unanswered.

I've never read any extra materials and have only ever watched Rose Red, but I was under the impression that any specific reasons were not meant to be revealed. There's simply something wrong with the house and it's likely related to the land it was built upon (a theme King likes). If the viewer wants it to go deeper and be more specific, they're open to think about it but there are no concrete answers provided.

the land the house was built on was an indian burial ground.

king has used this idea in several of his writings.
